Hello,

Whilst upgrading to Explorer 6,0 from 5.0, had to restart to complete installation. Everything seemed o.k., wallpaper appeared then it froze.(no taskbar visible). Tried booting in safe mode, again froze at same point. I've checked boot records (o.k)
and run scan disk doesn't reveal any errors. ctrl+alt+del doesn't work and I have to now restart manually.

If this is terminal, and I have to re-install windows 98, is it possible to do this and save my personal data (e-mail etc) without being able to access the OS.

Any expert advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi there Drum, and welcome to CTH!!! :)

What I'd try to do first is, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel, then click on the "add/remove" image, then look for Internet Explorer and click on that. At the top you'll see an option to go back to a previous version of IE, I'd do that. Once this is done, I'd then go to Windows Update, and install any "critical" updates. Then try installing IE 6 again, and once done, do another Windows Update, adding any "new" critical updates!! :)

Dave.

Thanks for the welcome Lufbra,

Should have made it clear that I can't go to 'Start', because it's not there to go to, just my Wallpaper picture frozen.

It boots to that, and then locks up.

Hello,drum77

Did you try this

boot with your Windows Startup diskette at the command prompt type: SCANREG /RESTORE

and choose a date before this started

Don't wait to long for you can only go back 4 days I think it is

Good luck

Just followed your advice Puro, and it worked. I've now managed to get back into windows, and get rid of the corrupted Explorer 6.
Everything is working just fine.

Time for a very large drink in your honour.

Thanks,
