View Full Version : 4 problems: freezing on log on, programs won't open, disk defrag and disk space

My computer constantly freezes (one out of three times) whenever I try to log onto my school's network. I've tried to speak to my school's IT staff but they have no idea what's wrong. I have a Toshiba laptop, Satellite, running Win ME. What happens is that it starts up fine, gets up to the log on screen, I'll log on and then it'll freeze, keeping the blue screen as the background. Considering this happens every 1 out of 3 times almost, it's getting to be rather of a problem. Sometimes it happens twice in a row, sometimes three times, and most times Ctrl, Alt, Del won't work, but when it does work, there is usually only two programs running. I usually have to press the reset button at the back. Any idea what's wrong?

Another problem I have with it is that sometimes I turn it on and none of the programs will open. Not Word, not Excel, not Access... nothing. Which obviously means that it has to be rebooted. I'd just press the button on the taskbar down the bottom, and it won't open the programs, however, My Computer and other folders will open. When I press ctrl, alt, del, then it shows several winwords (however many times I've pressed the Word icon). It doesn't matter where I try to open Word from, it just won't open, not from the Program folder either. And it sounds like it's going to open it by making thinking noises, but it doesn't open.

And yet another problem is with disk defrag, whenever I try to run it, it won't run properly. It'll get through about ten percent and then say that I have a program running that I should close. The problem is that I don't have a program running. It doesn't matter whether I've just started the computer up or have been using it for 6 hours, disk defrag won't work. I've talked to IT people about it and it seems that it's supposed to be a inherent windows problem. Anyway to get around it?

And last problem. :) When I delete programs I find out that I have LESS disk space rather than MORE. Seems to make clearing out the hard drive pointless.

I hope that someone can help,

Ayla

Hello,Ayla

Now first thing i need you to do is
this go here & do a Virus scan it's free

http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/

& are you using a Virus scanner if so is it
up to date now if you run scandisk & defrag
from your desktop please close all running
programs you may need to disable the
Virus scanner & please do not do this on line

Now try this before you do the scandisk & defrag
goto Internet Properties & click on Delete cookies
& Clear History now for safe mode

Try this -

Start->Run->msconfig [enter]

Click on Advanced and then check the box 'Enable Startup Menu'. Restart the system. & you want the Safe mode only option

now do your scandisk & defrag then go back
to your desktop & make sure that you go &
Uncheck 'Enable Startup Menu' Reboot

Lit us know

Good luck
