I'm trying to connect two computers to the internet. I'm using a Motorola SB4101 modem and a D-Link DI-514 router. When I input the ip address that the router manual tells me to do, it won't work. I called D-Link and they TRIED to guide me through the setup process, but they said that there's something wrong with my TCP/IP thingy. Sorry if I'm not explaining this correctly or using the correct words. I'm new at this router stuff. But I did plug the ethernet cables correctly. I'm just having problems seting up the router. Can someone help me with this media state disconnected IP problem?

Hi namagodai and welocme to CTH.

Let's see if we can get this figured out. Your main issue seems to be:

Can someone help me with this media state disconnected IP problem? First make sure you have an ethernet PATCH cable not a CROSSOVER cable.
Next, check the device manager. Does the network card show up? Does it have a '!' or a '?' next to it?
Next, go to your network connection and open the properties for your connection. List all the protocols you have installed back here.

how can i tell if the cable is a patch or a crossover?
I don't see anything in my device manager that has a ! or a ?

in the internet protocols everything is set to automatically obtain ip address.

To check the ethernet cable, look at the ends. If you can see the wire colors, a patch cable will have the colors in the same order at both ends. A crossover cable will have different color orders at each end.

the colors match so i guess thats a patch cable.

Can you open a DOS command window and run 'ipconfig /all' and post the output back here? I'd like to see what you have setup.
