Recently my PC hasnt let me open any programs or folders. When I go onto the start menu,It says that (Program Name) has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL,and then closes. The same happens when I try to access my hard drive or CD-Rom drive on 'my computer.'
About a week before it happened, programs such as Media Player & Winamp,(both the latest version) wouldnt let me play sound.Whenever I tried to open any type of sound or video file,it just didnt open.I'm sure somebody can help me out.

I cant open any program at all. When I try and select something from the start menu,it says something like:
EXPLORER caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL.
This file shall now be closed.
Similar message comes up when I connect to AOL.Except instead of saying EXPLORER,it says WAOL.
I cant even shutdown my computer correctly.I usually have to to ctrl alt + delete and select shutdown, and sometimes that doesnt even work.

Just try seeing if it works on safemode (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/tutorial.php/id/24)
I don't know how you'd fix it there but just see if it works there.

One of my friends told me it might be a virus.I tried it on safe mode and thankfully it works.

What is the exact error you are recieving? When the error comes up, click the details button.
Boot

There isn't a details box. What it does say is
(Program Name) has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL.This program shall now close.
If problems persist,restart your computer.
And theres a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it,not like the usual white cross in the red circle.

Hi Boot - unfortunately error messages are often hard to pin down. Your friend suggested that you could have a virus and he/she could be right. Even if you have already scanned your system, go here (http://housecall.antivirus.com/) and run the free online scanner. If your PC is clean, have a look at this document from microsoft Error Messages in Mmsystem.dll or Rundll32 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q138835). See if the fix helps you. Let us know how you get on.

Hi -
Using the microsoft K?B article will fix part of the problem :
What you want to do is in this order :
Boot into safemode -
Windows ME.
Shut down your pc and restart it.
As soon as it starts hold down the CTRL key until the windows start up menu appears.
Press the number 3 and then enter.
When it finishes loading, help and support may appear, if so please exit from it.
Then in safe mode :
1. Go to start run type System.ini . ( it will open in notepad )
2. Add the following line to the [boot] section of the file:
3.
4. drivers=mmsystem.dll
5. Save and then close the System.ini file.
then un/reinstall your moniters and display adapters from the device manager.
Note" If you ave doen windows updates and have updated to Internet Explorer 6 - you will constantly have these problems, with "explorer....exe..." errors.
Check.
