Windows 2000 keeps rebooting

Windows 2000 keep rebooting right after drivers loaded. I tried every optiond of F8 to no avail. I booted with CD with repair to C:WINNT prompt and ran Fixboot and chkdsk and no change. This started after my kid had install some software to conver iTune songs to MP3.

I don't a good backup and try aviod reinstallation. I appreciate any help. Is there any way to edit registry at C:WINNT prompt? What parameter in registry may be set that it reboots?

Hi hfarmani welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

Can you get to Safe Mode?

If you can then go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall that iTune converter.

You can also boot to Safe Mode with Networking and in my signature below is ewido and Panda.
A scan at both sites to eliminate any spyware and viruses would be in order.

Windows 2000 keeps rebooting

Thank you for response. The answer is no. None of the options work. Just after loading software or driver a black screens shows (as normal) but computer restarts.

I installed fresh Windows 2000 pro on another Folder (WINNT2) of the same HD partition. It works. But I can not run my old programs. Mcafee Antivirous found no problem.

I think the problem is a change of a parameter in one the configuration or registry file which I don't know how it is changed. Perhaps some one has got through our firewall.

If I find no solution, I have to keep the new installation, but I don't know to uninstall the old Windows and all the old programms.

hi,
just try and reinstall the o/s on a another hard disk then make the old hard disk the secondary drive then you should be able to copy all your data.In terms of secuirty just change the security once it is a secondary drive.

Windows 2000 keep rebooting

Dear rajdesai,

Thanks for the message. I actualy installed a fresh O/S on the same drive in a different folder, but I am looking for a solution to fix the old one. I have many programs that would take a long time to reinstall them. Also it will take many hours for all the updates.

Beside If I cannot find any solution, I would like to know how I can clean up the old O/S and program safely without messing the new ones.

Thanks,
Hassan

If you boot to your Windows 2000 CD and select the Recovery Console and then select
the first Windows 2000 install (the busted one) you can try typing these commands...
chkdsk /r then when that is finished...
fixboot
