My hard drive crashed, and i installed a new 40 gig. I have 256K of RAM on my PC, but after installing windows ME from the disc to the new HD, my system is working very slowly, and it says that there are only 64K of RAM. Can anyone help me find my missing RAM. Geez, I sound like Little Bo Peep :-S. Thanks

Muziklover, perhaps you could describe the circumstances leading to your HD "crash". If there was a power surge or spike for example, that could also have affected your RAM.

Actually, a good overview of your whole system could be helpful. Being able to picture the environment generally makes "remote" analysis a lot easier.

My mistake, I meant 256 megs of RAM. The system was a custom built, and the computer dealer went out of business soon after I bought it. It has an AMD Duron Processor, but dosent say how fast. Thats about all i can say about it, other than the HD is a Maxtor 40gig, which replaced the 10gig that was originally in it. I am not sure how the HD crashed, the PC was left on, and when i got home, it was off, and never was able to boot up again. I replaced the HD at the recommendation of Microsoft ME tech support, reinstalled windows ME from the disc, and everything seems to work, although much slower than it used to, and also locks up very often. I am sorry that I cant be more specific, but my knowledge is rather limited about this stuff. thanks again for the help.

Could one of the memory sticks possibly got zapped with static or come out of it's slot slightly?

Some more questions:
1. Was anything else replaced?
2. Was your disk tested on any other system?
3. Was your disk recognized by the computer - in the POST dialogue?
4. Are all your fans turning & clean?

Go HERE (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) and download a program called Belarc Advisor. Install it after download and it will give you a report of what it sees on your system - both hardware & software. This program is easy to install & remove and it leaves no residue after removal. It's also small enough to save to a floppy for future use.

After you run this program, you can post the highlights of what you have in your system, and you should save a copy of the report for future reference.
