Now what?
My taskbar is not showing the open programs. I have tried :
restarting
expanding the taskbar to see if they are hiding
moving the vertical spacebar
Suggestions?

Hi mp5928 Welcome to CTH
If this just started try this,
Click Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ MS-DOS Prompt
At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type scanreg /restore
and hit Enter
Note the space between the g and /
Registry Checker will ask, Would you like to continue?
Click YES
Select a date before the problem started and click OK

Thank you, gstone4911, for your idea.
Unfortunately it didn't make the instant access buttons appear. Bummer.
Would it help to know that the little vertical bar that slides on the taskbar doesn't go all the way down to the icons of runnign programs (on the right)? It stops about an inch from them

Check a couple of things.
If you right click in an empty space on the taskbar and hilight Toolbars,
there should be a check beside Quick Launch.
Also, do the same thing except click Properties then the Advanced tab.
In the window scroll down to Taskbar. Make sure there are checks beside
Display shortcut menu on right-click
and
Enable moving and resizing
