No sound at All

Hi All, all the best for New Year!
I am running Windows 2000 Pro, and have an ongoing problem with sound....there is'nt any. I have been in Device manager and Event Viewer, but nothing shows up. I have deleted the Sound Card Driver and downloaded another and installed (vinyl_audioCodec v620b [1]. aiu 620b), but stillI get nothing. Everything was working fine then at one point I lost it all. may be it is something I have done something wrong. Vision is OK and the sound is not muted. Completely stumped now, can you give me a hand out here. thanks.
Jopra.

Hmm, well, these onboard cards can be tricky. Just to be sure, I'd go to safe mode and remove anything listed for this device. Then I'd install the latest drivers from VIA. Make sure you get everything uninstalled and that you get the VIA drivers.

Well, in safe mode you should go to device manager and remove things from there. Don't go into the registry or delete any files. Do you know how to get to device manager?
