Im having a problem

I think my computer might be in safe mode, but im not sure.
Heres what is happening, I cant do anything that plays music(or sounds), or anything with directX. And the colors and size of the icons and everything are messed up. The icons look bigger and some colors are missing. Does it sound like Im in safe mode? I dont know how i can tell or get out of it. Any help would be great.

Hi ShimmerLane, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

When you're in Safe Mode it shows the words Safe Mode
around the edges of the desktop.

What has probably happened (if your not in Safe Mode) is you've
lost or corrupted the drivers for your graphics card/chips.

Open up Display in Control Panel and go to the
Settings(tab)
in the colors field...how many selections are there?
what are they?
If 256colors is the most you have then the driver is kapoot.

Also...

If you haven't done so, it might be a good idea to update Windows98.

Open up Internet Explorer and in the menu under Tools
is Windows update.

You want to get either IE5 SP2 or IE6 and after
those are installed and you've rebooted, return to Windows
Update and get every Critical Update showing in the

Ok I looked at the colors. There were three choices which were:
16 colors
256 colors and
High color (16 bit)
Is the driver kaputt?

I guess its not in safe mode because theres no words around the screen. So should I do the Windows Update?

Put the Colors to High color (16bit)
then set the Screen area to 800 x 600

And yes, do the Windows Update for sure.

I dont know how to pick all the right updates. I dont see IE5 or Sp2 anywhere but i do see critiacal updates. So should i go with the critical? The colors and screen, I put them on what you said and then a box popped up and asked me to restart, I did. When it restarted it went back to the other settings, 16 colors and 640 x 480. So that didnt work. Did I do it right? The settings dont change.

Puro thanks for telling me that, but i did something like that(removing a sound program and then add it again). When I did it though when it was being added again it needed a disc and i had the right one, but it never worked. So I dont know if I want to remove that adapter because I dont know if ill get it back. This may sound a little confusing but I tried to explain it the best I could.

I also updated the Windows thing but I dont know if it helped or not. I still cant get the colors back. I try! I set them and hit apply. Then it asks to restart ( is that the same as reboot?) and I do that. But when it restarts its unchanged.

Download the .exe version, Once downloaded, just double click on it to install.

I had the same intel card and had the same problem that you have now I will tell you what happened and how I fix it. my computer was running fine and I downloaded webshot, witch is a screen saver program in the webshot maneger I un checked a few pic's ther and thats when the problem happened, I did not put two and two together for sometime. If you have downloaded a screen saver you might try uninstalling it
