do I want to connect...I am connected!!

Hi,

I have recently reconnect my comp to the internet. I went to an ISP called Aardvark and got a username phone number etc. I did this on the uni computers. I went home and set up the connection; all fine.

I then clicked on IE and a message box came up saying connect or say off line. I clicked connect and the connection box came up. (The usual one with user name, password etc) I click connect and it connected to the ISP fine. IE then continued to load my homepage (google). It then came up with a mess box saying
"you (or a prog) have requested information from <web site> which connection do you want to use" Underneath there is a list of three connections. The first being MS referal, Second being AOL which I used to have but uninstalled about 4 months ago and the third being Aardvark. I thought this box odd as I was already online. I clicked cancel and the page would not open. I tried again and clicked dial and again the page would not open. I am online but cannot get any pages.

When I closed IE the box came up saying stay connected or disconnect. I clicked disconnect. But it doesnt. To disconnect I have to rightclick on the icon inthe system tray and disconnect.

It just seems that IE half believes I am connected and half not.

Cheers for any help

RIchard

Thanks for the reply enat66 I have done what you said and still have the same problem. I just get the box up with Aardvark instead of MS referal, AOL and aardvark.

Reinstalling Windows woul work but it's a bit drastic at the moment.

Try deleting all of the connections from Dial Up Networking and then adding the ones that you want again.

Hi
Thanks Steven.Bentley for the reply. I have done that and I thought I had success. It opened up goggle and managed to do a search. Then the same prob started again. The message box came up asking if I wanted to connect. It said something about a prog called tinybars I think wanting info of the net. Never heard of that prog. Has anyone else?

Cheers Richard

Hi RichardJones - you may have spyware trying to call home on your PC. Firstly, go here and download and install AdAware and RefUpdate. Make sure that you read the instructions and then scan your PC. When prompted, choose to make backups. You should know however, some programs will cease to function when spyware is removed from them.

When you have done that, could you please go here (this is a direct download link) and install and run Startup List. It will generate a text file. Please paste it back here and we can see if there is anything else left to deal with.

Don't Tiny make a Firewall?

Richard, frankly if you have uninstalled AOL and still want to get on line, I'd be backing up, formatting C and reinstalling windows BUT, having said that, you shouldn't really need to.

In IE, go tools > Internet Options > connections.
Check to make sure that your Aarvark is the only connection still listed and make sure "always dial my default connection" is selected.

Otherwise we need to find out what this application is that either needs to be removed or told about your new ISP in it's own settings.

AnnMarie's links should get us somewhere towards finding out what it is.
