i lost my admin password so i ran a linux boot disk application to change it. after i tried to do this not only did it not work, but now dell has this "password authentication system" up and it requires the administrator password before it loads anything. it won't let me boot from a cd and this laptop has no flopy drive so i don't know if it will boot from that. i reformated the drive because i figured i would just upgrade to xp anyway, but that didn't get rid of it. then i removed the hard drive all togeather and tried to boot from the cd drive and the dell thing was still there. i disconected the battery back up to the ram, still there. i took the ram out, still there. i need to get around this stupid dell thing so i can reload my os. any help would be great. thanks

Hi
On most dell laptops there is a chip on the motherboard with BIOS Passwords, the only way to bypass this chip is to get a master password for your system, or replace the chip itself which is not cheap. To get the master password which is generated from your serial no you must contact dell, as long as you are the original owner of the laptop or you have the original owners details. They will give you the password to bypass and switch off the password callup. There is no other way to remove this because it is embedded into the bios. so re-installing, taking out batterys ect will not work
