I am using Windows 98 Upgrade and I have installed Explorer version 6 and Outlook Express version 6. Now, every time I Boot my computer, I get a message panel coming up saying:- This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. When I click the details icon, it says the problem is in connection with SHDOC401.dll. I can close this panel and then everything appears to work OK but I would like to be able to stop this panel coming up every time I Boot. Can anyone tell me what I must do to cure this problem?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have tried IE repair but this did not rectify the problem. I have also tried re-installing IE v6 but this did not work either. As I mentioned before, it could be that the problem is connected with SHDOC401.dll but I am at a lose to know what to try next. Have you any other suggestions that I could try?

Hi tpegley - have you had any luck yet? I see that there are some good tips in the link that Puro provided. Let us know what you have tried since you last posted.
BTW You did run a virus scan didnt you. If not, try this free online scanner Housecall (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=Housecall)

Thanks for your reply. I have printed out the document that you suggested but I haven't tried all the suggestions it contained yet. The document did appear to be referring mostly to IE5 whereas I am using IE6. I will let you know if I have any luck with this problem soon

Hi, Sorry for the delay. I have now tried all the suggestions in the document you recommended. Running the Regsvr32.exe program has resulted in the Explorer message only coming up sometimes, whereas, before, it used to come up every time I Booted the computer. However, I would still like to get to the stage where this message did not come up at all.
