Post iTunes renders computer unstable

I have a Dell laptop - W2K SP4. Per website, Apple supports this load. I downloaded iTunes and immediately my machine became unstable. It would not start up, could not get to login screen. I started in Safe Mode and deleted the iTunes directory and my machine became fully operational as soon as I did that and re-started. I had the iTunes/iPod Cd from Apple and inadvertantly had in the cd drive as my machine was starting up. Now my machines does the same, tries to start but just sits there in startup. I tried to go back in in Safe Mode, but could not find any iTunes/iPod directories or files to delete.

Can anyone help please?

thanks

What you might try is: go in to the Control Panel and see if anything is in there and delete it and reinstall the software.

Thanks for the reply.

I cannot get to the control panel.. Once the machine finally does boot up, it is impossble to actually do anything. The most I have been able to do is ctrl-alt-del to see the processes and that takes about 45-60 minutes to complete.
