No speaker output with WAV files, OK with MIDI files

A few days ago, my computer stopped having audio output to the speakers. I notice that (for instance) on Real Player, everything seems to be working and moving fine, but there is nothing coming out of the speakers. When I tried a MIDI file, it worked the same only WITH sound coming out, but not with WAV files.
It does the same thing on Media Player.

I have not tried other files but notice the difference with WAV and MIDI files.

Any ideas??

First thing to check is double click on your volumn control the speaker at the top and see if your wav has a check in the mute.
