Why...Why...Why....?

Why do shows like Arrested Development,Surface,Threshold,American Dad get cancelled when shows like According to Jim..The Apprentice..The Bachelor..Yes Dear..etc. continue to thrive!!!!!!!!
can someone explain this to me!!! Oh btw I think Supernatural and Wanted are gone too.
Maybe I'm just getting old.
I don't get it.
Cheers

Cheers! Now that was a show of shows.
Why does anything last or not last? Money. Ratings = Money.
Besides if everyone liked the same thing, we'd only need one channel.

Money + Ratings, which probably meld into each other. It's a shame. I heard rumours about several shows.
Deadwood was aparently hanging by a thread. Family Guy (forerunner to American Dad) and Futurama were going to be cancelled after one season.

Boardrooms just want ratings, even though they could get more viewers if they have time to develop series.

Recently Andy Hamilton, a uk writer, stated that he would never work for BBC1 again after his sitcom was resheduled after three primetime screenings.

I'm convinced that nobody actually likes BBC Radio 1 but it is forced upon people as part of the license fee!

Some of the shows that survive makes one question the mentality of the average viewer. I know that every show is geared for the 19-49 age group, but that's when a person is supposed to be at they're peak mentally. I can't believe thay want to sit around and watch these stupid "reallity" shows. I pay over $50 USD per month for cable television in this area. I'm starting to consider going back to an antenna and saving the money.

Afraid not. Do you mean tv ratings doesn't mean squat to you or your system goes on another system of who stays and who goes? Regardless of the system, I bet it still boils down to money as the botom line.
Many shows here have been close to cancellation because they were near the bottom. But by hook or crook, they were renewed for 6-13 weeks, revived, and went straight to the top to remain for years. Letters from people complaining or some Big Wheel makes the decision. Some shows just run their course and end with a splat or bang.
Some, me, don't even know how some shows ever start anyway because they are so bad. Apparently the top heads do something that may work.

Yeah, why pay for comercials when you can get them for free.

ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC have done really well in keeping free tv alive and well. They also compete really well with cable by providing watchable shows over cable. But not all shows are liked by all people. My wife and I watch the shows we like and turn the tv off when theres nothing on we want to watch. This has given us the chance to do more with each other than just being tv-holics. Less tv = more life. Try it.

I hardly ever watch TV just because of the lack of good programs (and time). If I do, it is almost always PBS for NOVA or something science/technology-related.

Two thing for Celt;
First, with your handle and a title of "why why why", I was bit dissapointed that your first line was not "Delilah".
second, I liked due South. Was that US or Canadian or a mixture?

Dammit, that was in extremely poor taste. Thats why I let out such a loud laugh, disrupting the kids watching "I'm a singing soap chef survivor dancing, get me out of the big brother jungle love island". (Last episode of lost series one, in truth).
