I want to replace my original IDE 30GB hard drive in my G4 tower that is running OS 9.2.2. I have copied the drive files as a complete HD to my external 60GB HD. I have an 80GB IDE HD installed as a slave and is running OSX 10.3.9. My question is this- now that I have a complete and bootable copy of my master drive, on my external drive, can I simply shut down, replace the 30GB with another new 80GB, start up, initialize the new 80GB and drag the OS9.2.2 hard drive copy from the external onto the new 80GB and be up and running- or do I have to start all over with re-installing everything again?? It seems easy and logical, does anybody know?? I am a new subscriber and this is my first post.

Yes. Shut down, install new drive, initialize, copy over OS9 and you're set.

The great thing about OS9 (or earlier) is that you can just copy everything. OS10 require reinstalling or third party software to copy.

Thanks, it seemed logical, but then again.......
I appreciate the quick reply.
I will do this today and post my results when done.

Well, I knew it sounded to easy to be true, I tried replacing my 30GB original HD with OS9.2.2 on it with a blank new 80GB HD and nothing happened. Once my external showed up on the desktop, this is the external drive that I copied everything from the 30GB to, but my slave 80Gb with OS10.3.9 was no where to be found. Normally there are 3 drives on my desktop, after the swap, there was 1-the external. Looked in disk set-up Utility and no drives to be foun except external and DVD drive. I have no clear instructions for the jumper pin positions, don't know if that is the problem, fortunately after a few tries and some luck, I was able to re-install the original 30GB that came with my system, and am back to where I began with 3 drives on the desktop, and I am able to log back on to get to this forum and look for help. These are all IDE drives, the 2 in the machine now are Maxtor 1 a 30 and the other an 80. The new drive is an Hitachi 80- thought this would work and would be relatively straight forward. What a sigh of elief 3 hours later when the old system showed back up on the desktop, so glad that I didn't clear/erase the 30 before removing.I am in the back country of Montana and can't just take it some where. Any body have any ideas or suggestions or have I wasted money on a drive that won't work for me?? If there are any ideas out there, please help..... Thanks, UNC

It, most likely, is a jumper issue since the 10.3 drive is set to slave as you posted.
