The English language is pretty bad. Words with the same spelling but different meanings etc.
But the Welsh had to go one better. Listen to the classified footy results :D

Sorry, was watching QOS and was convinced it was pronounced Jestin or Jesten. :D
llanelli is a different matter all together :laugh:

Iestyn = yes tin
Llanelli = thlan eth lee
A lot of English people use a ch when pronouncing a LL because, although incorrect it sounds the same to them and it's easier.
Although not I'm not fluent by any stretch of the imagination, I'm self taught to the point of being able to hold some conversation with Welsh speakers. It is very difficult to learn because(as with other Celtic languages) there are mutations which affect the initial letters of words :-
For instance :-
I live in Newport would be :-
Dw i'n byw yng nghasnewydd ( soft mutation )
Dw =I
i'n byw = live in
yng nghasnewydd = Newport.
The welsh for Newport is actually Casnewydd but the mutation of the initial "C" at the beginning of the word changes it to ngh, prounounced "ungh".
The literal translation for Casnewydd is actually :-
Newydd = New
Cas = Castle
So technically I could now be called a Geordie!!!!!
Tomorrow we'll move on to aspirate mutations.

ok kids, next time Mr Bean comes in to class, it is polite to greet him with "bore da Mr Bean".
When he calls your name for register, the correct answer is "yma"
:rotflmao:
Good explanation beanie, next teach them "dau cwrw mawr a fi bwtys cymraeg, osgwelych yn dda", in time for the Heineken Final ;)

I always think the pronunciation in words such as "the cough I caught in Loughborough cleared up by the time I arrived in Edinburgh" is a bit confusing.
