Windows stick on closing

Hi everyone;

I have a Win98 system that in the last two weeks has started giving difficulty with closing application windows, or if there are two or three windows open. The system seems to stick when asked to close, minimize or open a new window. Doesn't happen all the time, and often I can still use one of the other open applications okay. All windows updates are present, system has been scanned for viruses and none found. Any suggestions on alleviating this frustrating aspect? thanks. riva.

Have you defragged lately? If not run defrag but do it in safe mode.

Hi Idnew;

We did your suggestion and defragged and scandisked in safe mode. Thus far the problem isn't occuring at the same rate. It is most noticable with one program now. The minimize control corner doesn't minimize the window. We will keep an eye and see if the problem gets worse or not.

As an aside, I did an additonal activescan and all was clear there too. It's more of a nuisance problem than anything at this point, but any and all suggestions are appreciated.

If we can narrow it to one program and have it stay that way, we can reinstall the program, but since it is a windows element that is not working, I'm wondering if there is a corrupt windows file?

Boot to MS/dos and type in scanreg/fix

Hi Idnew;

Unfortunately that didn't get very far on the system. At the 1% mark, a memory error occurred.

"Not enough free conventional memory. You may need to remark (REM) some device drivers in config.sys or, in your config.sys you may need to load emm386.exe driver to load your other device drivers into upper memory blocks using DEVICEHIGH= statements."

Since they didn't have their Win98 CD on hand, and since it's been eons since I did these steps on any computer, I left it for now. I haven't checked back to see how the app windows are doing, but will be going over there later today - freezing rain permitting.
