I am extremely fearfull to think of any one of you guys running linux...
Compared to about 99.9% of the logs i do belive that this one falls under the smallest one ever made!!!
Why,Why is it so hard to keep your computer running smoothly when... all ya have to do is not download and install every single pieace of software you see. That you won't likely ever use. Or need.
Software !I installed!
7-zip 3.13
FireFox
Adobe Reader 7.0
Neverwinter Nights
Rubies of Eventide
Dev Blood C++
Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/)
apache 2.2.0
Mirc (which gives me irc and a msn messanger client)
An application to connect to campus network(doesn't allow *nix :disgust: )
now looking over my installed program list I begin to wonder... why would you need much else? Half the people don't even need a webserver to test webpage cgi's or dev c++ to create cgi applications?
Non-developers use thier pc mainly to play games and chat to friends and surf? correct? Why in the world would you need 500 diffrent applications to do all of that?

All people like different things so their computers are being used as such.
But you are right that some really go over the top. Most computer problems these days are self made by d/l'ing every little app out there to play with. And then wonder why system doesn't work right.:dizzy:
But a lot of it is just playing around. That's one of the main reasons for most to have a computer. Want to use Excel. Access, PowerPoint all the time only?
No. We want to have fun. If we are fortunate enough to know how to get out of a mess we created, great. If one can't get through, that's what we are here for. It's fun and games, man. One computer literate can not make statements about thousands of computer illiterates. Trial and error makes learning possible. (sometimes the very hard way)
But I have to ask: What do you suppose we all do, Decay?

Don't know the pecking order of your family so hard to put blame on who I don't know. But if your desktop is full of shortcuts, and you are the main user of system (??), just delete them all. They will still be in the system to find easy enough.
I have 5 items items on my desktop. That's just me.;)

i think Decay has got a little bitty computer with a little bitty harddrive.
don't have a 100gig harddrive... just a 50gig...
what ya need nero for?
[NeroCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
last i checked winxp had burning and ripping cababilitys... :rotflmao:
QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
yet you use winamp? why have two applications with same ability?
i mean your saying i have itsy bitsy computer yet you have services running that you won't ever likely.. need according to you....
cisvc.exe know what it does? its bill gates excuse to buy new pcs it eats alot of memory to alert you if your low on memory... Go bill gates!
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win2000/Q_20695184.html
i could litterly go through ever single of *stuff* you threw on your computer and make it run like brand new... Computers only run as good as they are treated sing a song and they will grow :rotflmao:
I have 3 older pc's and 5 very older pc's oldest one being a ps/2 ibm ... made back in 1982 and i tell ya i bet it runs 10x faster than your pc with its win3.1
windows xp has always been on my "most annoying to 'fix' after installing"
do you people really need all those services... NOPE... yet you have them all...
first time i got fustrated with linux was when libs i didn't need were installed if its something i won't use i don't want it... Windows is a bloat machine.... I bet half ya don't know the poitnental of your computer.... considering windows lowers it a ton by default...
nope that wasn't os raceism there :) just stating that unless ya do around 30-40 diffrent reghaks and turn off 20-30 services winxp by default is suppose to kill your pc with memory leaking applications that ya don't need.
When i hear "windows crashed" or "windows freezed" half the time i really really really really want to say "Whats your point? Its windows?"
Winxp was suppose to be the stable server replacement of nt... its more stable than nt but still no where near a linux system in security or stability...
Windows Vista is adding diddly for Either... Go download it with your msdn account... All it does is steal firefoxs Tab Browsing.... for ie7... Steal window blinds Enchanced Gui... and Steal Linux gui's Warfs.... what does all this mean? its windows xp with 10x more overhead of garbage to slow down your pc that does NOTHING which linux already has... AND RUNS FASTER!!! AND MORE STABLE
I plan on buying vista for sure... 500$ and slower than a slug... and bug ridden... Bill Gates forgot how to be a programmer long ago...
One of the first things they teach ya for programming is Stability and Security are MOST IMPORTANT THINGS. Gui is lowman on the hill...
here at usd .... WE USE CISCO UNIX... which supprizes me why we can't connect our pcs using nix* based os's .. which is a totally diffrent rant...
~Windows Toaster~
Frying one pc at a time
The only reason that Linux hasnt' dominated the market is because people are... :dizzy: (fill blank with what ya want)
people use windows to play games.... companys make games for windows cause people use windows...
sad truth but wait... a game that has got more rewards than any other... MADE A LINUX PORT... http://nwn.bioware.com/
how many game of year rewards did they get... i think they lost count..
http://anarchyonline.com/ was going to release a linux port but thought the market was dead for linux games... Think Neverwinter Nights shows otherwise...
Lokigames (http://www.lokigames.com/products/) closed out and died know why? Cause bestbuy/walmart refused thier product... yup thats right refused it... I asked the store manger why? He stated that since they already carry the product for windows there is no need for other titles of same product.
Think on that a minute. Best Buy which sells Linux Redhat refused to sell software for linux... reasoning? They just couldn't understand software on windows isn't met to run on linux...
Lokigames was a attempt to port major video game titles to linux. Which one of thier goals was to get major retailers like Walmart // Bestbuy to sell...
Another fun rant... Walmart lost thier discount from Microsoft for retailers... Know why??? They sold Computers with Pre-installed Linux...
Where did Bill Gates get his operating system? He stold it from Apple... aka mac
O another fun rant mac refuses to conform to standards of computers.. need to replace that harddrive for your mac ... sure pay $1000 and apple will send it out to ya... It becomes a joke when companys like Apple and Microsoft are allowed to exist in a supposly free market...
If i buy something... Sun Systems/IBM/CISCO all the way!!!
Microsoft has never developed any new ideas just stold everyone elses.
Windows OS /MAC
IE|tabbed browsing/NETSCAPE | Opera/firefox
What has Microsoft ever done... Belive me i am not mac fan but if i had one i would use it instead of windows to connect to campus network....

So long, long story short, you dislike Windows, eh?
~Windows Toaster~ (Gill Gates)
Consider that he made this money in the 25 years or so since Microsoft was founded in 1975. If you presume that he has worked 14 hours a day on every business day of the year since then, that means he's been making money at a staggering million dollars per hour, around $300 per second.
Which means that if, on his way into the office, should he see or drop a $1000 bill on the ground, it's just not worth his time to bend over and pick it up. He would make more just heading off to work.
You don't like Windows. I and apparently a billion of us do. The man with the most toys when he dies wins. I think Bill has won a long time ago.
Just my opinion. I could be wrong. :hmm:
(Note: This article was written in 1998, Bill's Fortunes have dropped a touch since then.)

So Decay, if everything you say about all this is true, why isn't everyone all over the computing world "living" by what you say, and turning to the computing way of life that you live?
Let's look at this from your prospective......Everyone in the world discards everything Microsoft related, and went with all your suggestions. No Windows OS's, no IE browsers, in other words there's nothing Microsoft, they're just not there, Bill Gates, who the heck is he?
But wait, someone out there in this great computing world develops an OS named Linux, and heck, someone else takes the effort to create a browser named Firefox!!! SEESH, companies that are willing to do such things for the whole world over, for FREE!!! OMG, have I died and gone to heaven!!!
Just think about it, you think your computer is safe from all the "baddies" out there for now, but come on pal, do you honestly think that there's absolutely no one out there trying to make your computiing experience insecure....And they will, because if you think about it, at the end of the day there's companies who rely on sending out "baddies". We're not all gullible enough to fall for them. but there are enough that makes it worthwhile for them to keep doing it. :)

well i'll break it down for you... unsure if your programming knowledge...
Linux uses security through good code
Windows uses security through closed code
What does that all mean?
The huge spike in malware/spyware has come from the fact windows 98 source code was released to the public by a person who broke into microsoft servers...
Once they gained ahold of windows source code they noticed bugs and exploitable "features" throughout the entire os.. including the way windows handles pictures (remember jpg viruses) Did these jpg viruses affect linux users since they use jpg images also? NOPE. why not? because it was a bug in windows. Not the image format...(The point is windows 98 and windows xp share alot of same code very little is changed...)
While Linux source code is available to anyone who dares to read.
Notice something?
Linux is open source yet still secured.(more so than windows)
Windows is closed source yet Thousands ontop of Thousands of exploits are found...(more so than linux)
That fact is windows at this very moment likely has over 2million exploitable bugs... if the source code of windows xp was to be open source at this very moment all of them would be found in matter of minutes...
At the moment the only security Microsofts Windows provides is through obsurity... IF you still don't understand the concept read the defintion..
You don't like Windows. I and apparently a billion of us do. The man with the most toys when he dies wins. I think Bill has won a long time ago.
you like windows why? all i see on these forums is people complainning of thier system crashing, security issues and people whinning about spyware/malware.... you enjoy spyware/malware??? (Firefox was orginally deveopled for nix based systems and later ported to windows, kinda like apache, and gimp... of course since not ran on linux .. like apaches warning says would be more secure on linux)
So Decay, if everything you say about all this is true, why isn't everyone all over the computing world "living" by what you say

someone out there in this great computing world develops an OS named Linux
Linux operation system was developed by millions of billions of programmers across the globe... the project was started by linus torvold during his college years.
Your saying who would help develop for linux?
IBM is the major supporter of linux... Through funding and source code that they bought off SCO and used in linux (becomes controversal because SCO demand that the source code was private intellengence even after SCO post alot thier source code on thier own hompage, which obviously voids thier intellegent property rights, since they sold copywrites to IBM)
But whos ibm?
http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/system7/system7_intro.html
Is that a picture of one of those old old computers size of room with ibm logo on it?? no way!
http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/history/history_intro.html
wow not just computers but... scanners in check out lines and everything... :dizzy:
just viewing over ibm's homepage why would they want to use linux... not even looking at thier history of supplying the us goverment with computers...
http://www.ibm.com/us/
Buissness... so i guessing they will only want the best i mean those systems cost 16k+ to 100k+ whew... so what does ibm being the biggest supplier of bussiness server solutions suggest to use? Linux....
Wait its starting to look like those with less education use windows... and buisnesses use nix's...
Well yes thats generally how it was setup with unix... Windows you could say is a etch a sketch and linux is a computer... clear anything up?

your right Nick, it's a question of how much you want to play on a machine.
My kids machines get clogged up every now and again and then go splat. they are slowly learning how to behave, and also learning how to rebuild a machine and what a drag it is.
the boy is playing with Knoppix at the moment, so as long as they are expanding their horizons and learning from their mistakes, I'm happy.

In all seriousness though, Decay has a good point. Your starting to use your machine more and more and therefore finding out all the little foibles and "gotchas" that come about from day to day use. Nick also makes a good point, there are users from all ranges from barely able to switch the damn thing on, to full blown code-writers (the real "hackers" not to be mistaken for idiots who malaciously cause havoc).
Get hold of your local council education department, or library service (they're a single dept in my local council) and see what IT courses they have on offer. See if they can help you progress to the next level of understanding. You'll be amazed what you can learn. Tie that work in with all the stuff flying around the net, with CTH being an excellent resource, and it will all click into place for you.
Another good idea is to watch the Cyber Safety threads and read what happens with the HJT logs etc. You'll soon get a feel for whats bad stuff and also whats the good stuff. The explanations of what to remove and why is also a great aid in getting a better picture of whats going on.
Have a blast through the CTH tutorials, they are very informative. Read them a few times and start asking questions(OMG what am I saying!!!!! youre well on the way to wearing out your keyboard as it is :D ). It'll soon make sense.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, but make sure you structure the post trying to keep it to one or two points and dont ramble, otherwise the point(s) you are trying to make/get an answer too will get lost in the thread. (He says, rambling and loosing a "punchy" point!!!!).
Think of how satisfying it will be to stun your lads with your expanding knowledge

In response to the first post asking "how can you have so much garbage on your computer?"...the answer is that the average user just want to use their computers, they don't want to learn how to do anything beyond how to turn it on and use the programs they like.
I know how to start a vehicle and get it to where I want to go. When it needs maintenance, I pay a mechanic. When my customers' computers need maintenance, they pay me. It's easy to see why I'm never going to complain about the average computer user.
I realize ranting about Windows and Bill Gates is a popular activity. As I see it, Windows made computers accessible to millions of average users (see paragraph 1). While praising the wonders of Linux is also popular in some circles, the fact remains it requires more computer expertise than point-and-click Windows and that's more computer expertise than the average user wants to learn (see paragraph 1).

Billions of people can not be totally wrong.
"How can the millions be wrong? And how can the minority of one be right?" - George Orwell's 1984
(lols, just messing with ya gran-gran =D)
Good points Miz... I used to try to explain to the people who came to me with a problem after I fixed it. They were like "How did you do that? You're like so awesome!" "It's easy really, you just open the... hey, where ya goin'?" They really rather not hear it, it's more of a "well, just so it works. good job!" kinda deal. But some people (like my mom, who knows I won't be able to run from my dorm in college to crop a picture for her xD) will ask me how to do something (although it's pretty rare).
And I think another factor is... aren't most applications made for Windows? Oh wait... you already explained this... Most people use Windows -> people make apps for Windows because so many people use it -> businesses only buy the Windows stuff, and it's harder for people to buy something other than Windows since the apps they want is only made for that OS
Such a vicious cycle. ^_~ We all just need to get Altimit, the greatest OS ever (lols, I live in such a fantasy world =P)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/TheMafia/altimit.jpg sounds great! read the hardware maybe? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALTIMIT_OS)

I can agree to that, but it would be the same if this was a car forum.
(=Lets use this example considering Ford as windows and Linux as a hummer...=)
Yes but if there was a alternative automotive lets say ... hummer... would you see complaing in thier thread? NOPE why not? Quality workmanship... thats why not.. The more effort and work that goes into a product the more 'quality' it gains...
"given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow"
If each hummer had 50 people working on it. Ensuring that the quality was tip top.. Would you want a hummer or a ford... considering most automobiles have 1 person inspecting? The ford might look 'pretty' and even run for a while.. but i would perfer to place my money in better 'quality'

Keeping with the same analogy, if I needed a car to get back & forth to work each day, some shopping, etc. and the choice was between that $9,000.00 Ford and the $67,000.00 Hummer..........you answered your own question.

Yeah, but the Linux wouldn't come with cool apps like a CD player, or air conditioning... Even though it's a better 'car,' it doesn't have the common/good apps that Ford has. =)

FREE HUMMERS!!
Free until you get to the gas station and have to pay about $3/gal when your 'quality' car gets about 5 mpg.
Then are you a Star Warz/Star Trek fan?

You can't prove to me quality assurance is any better on one car as opposed to another. They both probably suck. I've always said, and mean it, that if 2 people buy identical cars, 2 Lexus or 2 Fords, or 2 Hummers, one will be perfect in taking care of that car with proper maintenance and the other is lazy as a lion and procrastinates on everything. It's a matter of chance which will break first. I'll take my big Merc with police package and Windows over an overly large ugly piece of machine like a Hummer with Linux.
No one is going to be retrained on another OS after using windows for some time. You take the Hummer which is rarely seen on the road and I'll take my Merc which everyone and their brother owns one. But you are free to take what you like and so are we.:D

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.
At COMDEX recently, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive, but would run on only five percent of the roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.
7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again, because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
10. Oh yeah, and last but not least . . . you'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off!
