I have recently re-installed win98 on an old computer for the kids.
When it all boots to the desktop i can only get 2 colours or 16 colours,in my display settings, and the only resolution is 640x840.
I have had 256 colours on this before any help appreciated
thanks

Now you need to find and download the latest drivers for your video card.
If you don't know what video card you have, d/l program Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) and it will tell you all kinds of things in your computer.

downloaded belarc advisor, but all it tells me is that it is a-standard pci graphics adaptor (vga)
I have gone into display drivers but they say the drivers are ok

Howdy:
All Belarc will tell you is what it finds installed.. in your case the Windows generic video card and driver..
Try Everest (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/everest-home-edition) and take a look in the Video and/or Graphics area of the log..

Clilck Here (http://www.google.com/search?q=+sis+5597+drivers&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official) for links to various sites where you can download drivers for the SIS 5597.

Everest did not give anymore info on my video card than Belarc but it does have a lot more info to draw from. Mine just says Field Value
Device Description NVIDIA Vanta (HP - English), same as Belarc.
Nice probe though.;)
Thanks:cool:

I had a similar problem and here's what I did:
Start>settings>control panel>double click on display>settings tab>choose advanced>adapter tab>click next> click on show all hardware> choose standard display types in the left column and select SVGA in the right column>click OK> the dialog box message will say "The driver you have selected was not specifically written..." but click OK and follow directions.
It worked for me.

That's because you have the proper drivers for your video card installed.. Try removing your vid card and drivers then run Belarc.. Bet you get the generic driver read!!
