I am running a Logitech Deluxe QuickCam for Notebooks with built in
microphone with version 7.5 Messenger. I have set the webcam up and tested it
using the audio / video set-up in Messenger . I have also checked the audio /
video / voice settings in Windows ( running Windows Xp Home Edition SP2 ) and
ran the TEST HARDWARE set up . The video and audio both seem to work fine
when tested in the set-up mode with both test applications. I can view webcam
with no problems and the audio works perfectly when I use the voice clip in
messenger to record and send audio . My problem comes when I try to have a
VIDEO CONVERSATION ------ the audio starts out fine but then seems to have a
mind of it's own and i can't control it. The audio starts to screech and even
when I have the microphone volume almost turned all the way off . The problem
is always with my end and I can hear feedback through the speakers . I do
not have a built in microphone in the laptop itself so I know it's not
causing the problem . Can you help me through this .

Depends on your connections firewalls may make it get scratchy but, if you're running other programs or downloading via the net, it'll slow down the data transfer to the other computer or make it erratic. If you or, the person you're talking to has a slow internet connection it'll probably effect the quality of the sound data. Best thing I can tell you is to just make sure you aren't using the net for anything or your friend isn't and the quality may increase. Couple other varibles can cause things like this as well.

We are both running DSL by the same provider and we are not downloading or anything else of that nature during the video conversation . The green bar on the microphone in the MSN messenger picture display will start climbing and I can't adjust it , when it reaches the top of the bar we both get a screeching noise coming thru the speakers and have to end the conversation . I can do a webcam with him and use voice clip with no problem . I have the same problem with my desktop PC also with a completely different webcam.

I think that might be a bad ping rate, data getting bounced back and forth clogs up causing the screeching sound. I'm not sure, there's a way to fix it but, reinstalling MSN or upgrading might be the fix other then that, I think Microsoft needs to patch it or fix the servers.

Yes --- I downloaded the latest software update posted on the Logitech website and that has seemed to clear up the problem .
