I have three computers on a LAN and they are all members of the same workgroup. When I click the Network Neighbourhood icon, I see Icons for all three computers, with their computer names. However, on one computer, when I double click a named Icon (for a computer using Windows 200 Pro), a message panel headed "Enter Network Password" comes up listing the compuer name (RESOURCE) but with the suffix \IPC$ added. I am therefore unable to access this networked computer because the computer name with \IPC$ added is then not in the workgroup. Can anyone explain why the suffix of \IPC$ gets added and what can I do to prevent this?

The MSKB usually is a pretty good source for info. This article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q262916) sheds light on your problem (with an easy fix). :)

Hi,
Thank you for your suggestion. This looked really easy. However, when I clicked the Netlogon icon, a message panel came up saying:- Windows could not start the Net Logon on local computer. For more information, review the ststem event log. The system event log had this to say:-
This Windows NT computer is a configured as a member of a Workgroup, not as a member of a Domain. The Netlogon service does not have to be run in this configuration.
The passwork message in your suggested article was exactly what I am getting, i.e.: You must supply a password to make this connection: Resource: \\ computername\IPC$. Is there a quick solution to this problem for a Windows 2000 compuer that is configured as a member of a Workgroup?

Change the properties of the guest account to allow it access to the drives (if you have IIS services running, this could cause security problems) Other than that, i'm lost ;)

Thanks for your suggestion. I was not able to change the "Guests" properties to allow them access to all drives but, in the process of seeing what I could do with guests, I went through 'Users and Passwords', advanced, Advanced User Management, Advanced, Local Users and Groups, Users, Guest, Properties and then found that Boxes for 'User Cannot change Password' and 'Account is disabled' were both ticked. Having now removed these ticks, the Network NOW WORKS! Many thanks for all your efforts.
