Until now I had no problems accessing songs through Real Player (10.5 version)
Recently I received a couple of audio files that were in the winamp format which I listened to.
Since then, when I try to access my older audio files I get an error message saying that the files are corrupted.
I noticed that the icons for all of my audio files have changed to the winamp icons.
How do I recovert them to the Real Player format? Thanks for any help.

Open windows explorer and find an audio file in question.
Highlight that file, then shift/right click
Choose 'open with'
Scroll down to realplay and select that.
Check the box that says always use this program to open this type of file.
Click OK and you should be set.
Good luck.

Sorry it did not work.
I get a message that says: This clip cannot be played. It contains unexpected data and may be corrupt. More information available at RealPlayer customer Support website.
When I go the website, it talks abou downloading codecs which I did but the software applies only to Windows ME and XP (i have win98 SE).
I even tried to download the latest Realpayler but mine is the latest version.

Try THIS (http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1748)
Also, has this just happened. It may be possible to restore an earlier registry to fix the prob. Somewhere while d/l'ing winamp files, a tick in a box saying do you wish all audio files be associated with this? Sometimes they are pretty hidden in the text page. Happens to many people all the time.
Boot to real dos
At the c: prompt type scanreg/restore
Pick a date (stores only latest 5 days of good boots) this happened or the day before and see if that might help.
Reboot and see if any good changes were made.

Looks like Winamp has taken over your filetypes, it should have asked you if you wanted it to be default and you probably clicked yes without knowing what it was about to do.

Try this, first go to one of the files you previously could play and right click on it, at the bottom should be properties click that and find out what sort of file it is e.g.

.ra (realaudio)
.mp3
.RAM (realplayerpresentation)

When you know what sort of file it is do this:

Start button
Settings
Folder Options click

Folder options Window:
choose "file types" from the top
scroll down until you see the file type e.g. MP3
highllight this and choose "edit" from the right.

A new window will open and you choose "edit" again near the bottom

another smaller window will open above this
Click "browse" button

and go to the directory on your computer where your realplayer is stored e.g.
programs/real/ double clicking as you go ...until you are in the real directory then double click the file "realplayer"

the browse window will dissappear and you'll be back at the previous window, click "OK" to save the realplayer address.

Now that window will dissappear and you can choose "change icon" from the top, assign a real player icon, click "ok"

then click close & close again.

Now go to your file in your directory and double click it and it should open with realplayer.

Question is...does it play?

I tried both of the above suggestions but no luck.
I can upload one of the files and perhaps someone can try to play it and maybe come up with a solution.

What filetype is that?? It says MP3 but it isnt!!!!

I tried it in Realplayer,WMP and VLC and none would play it!!!!

I extracted this from my VLC log to try and help us figure this out:

main debug: creating new input thread
main: playlist item `C:\My Documents\ADi_varuvAi__part_.mp3'
main debug: waiting for thread completion
main warning: drive letter C: found in source string

I havent seen that before in those logs "Drive letter C found in source string" Whats that mean??

I have over 100 audio clips with the same problem . It would be wonderful if someone else can help me solve this. Thanks.

I searched but came to no real conclusions. From over-installing WMP to reinstalling DirectX. I run WMP 9.00.00.2980 and DirectX 9c.
Keeps saying the file you uploaded and I d/l'd (Class not registered)
Also file extension .mp3 does not match.
D/l'd some codecs that were mentioned to no avail.
So, sorry, no help here but tried.

I tried to play it and got this message "this clip cannot be played, It contains unexpected data and may be corrupt"

Is the winamp icon still showing on the files? Have you tried un-installing winamp?

Yes I have totally uninstalled the winamp program . Now my files do show the real Player icons but they still don't play and I get the same message as you have posted.
