What do i need to run m4v files

Quicktime can play m4v (MPEG-4 video) natively, but you can also get an MPEG-4 codec for WMP in the form of FFDShow (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm).

Thank you very much ive had a look what to do with the zipfile. where do i unzip it to please

Doesn't matter where you unzip it (as long as you remember the location), it's an installer.

right its unzipped i have the lone m4v file on my desktop how do i view it. Sorry for being so ignorant

Did you install FFDShow? If so, open WMP and drag the m4v file into it. If it plays (with sound), you can go ahead an create a file association (double click the file, Open With... WMP tick "Always...."). But in my experience, WMP for some reason hates MEPG-4 so good luck.
