hey-
Im running win2k, and for some reason the whole system just freezes up on startup, where the desktop doesnt finish loading and the start bar stays frozen. No applications are running, according to the task manager.
Not a big deal- until the same problem was happening in safe mode.
For some reason- logging in under Admin is the only thing that works. I know it must be something with my startup files, is this fixable even though im not logged in under the account the problem is happening with?
Also- Could I reformat to install win98 (would that be considered a downgrading?)?
Do I need to reformat to install win98?

From Windows 2000 to Windows 98 would be a downgrade indeed. 2000 is a good OS, I suggest you stick with it if you can.
Does it happen to any user or just non-Admin users?

You would indeed need to format as 98 uses FAT32 file system and 2k uses NTFS, however I wouldn't do this unless you have no other option. Startup trouble can be caused by a number of things so it would be best to start off with the most common issues. First scan for virus/spyware issues make sure you don't have something nasty on the computer. After you deem its clean then look for software problems driver issues, cut down the number of startup app's, ect ect. Lastly check for hardware issues. Look in event viewer for errors related to hardware and software. This is just a very generalised list of things to look at, but its a place to start.

There is only one user other than the Admin.
There are no hardware/software problems, as I do regularly keep everything updated and working...
I dont even know where to start... my anti birus/spyware/adware programs arent installed in the Admin login... Even then, I run them so regularly that I really do believe its some kind of non-threatning start up error but i dont know what to look for/change. the non-admin login doesnt even run in safe mode!

Hi krcvrly. Lets see what is running on your PC. Go here (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/section/adware-spyware-removal) and download the latest version of Hijack This. Unzip it and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.
Also go here (http://www.silentrunners.org/) and download Silent Runners.vbs to your Desktop (use IE) and run it. It generates a log too. Please post the information back in this thread. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

Yep, please download FixWareout from here http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe and save it to your Desktop. Doubleclick on Fixwareout.exe to extract the files and click Next and then Install. Make sure that "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin, follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer, please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load but this is normal.
When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:
