Hello,

I am trying to install windows 95, (or 98 as I have the upgrade for that). It is a Dell Laitude. It has the swappable floppy disk and cd rom. My problem is I can format the hard drive with the 95 OR 98 drive. I followed other directions on these forums ( here---> http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22468&highlight=swappable ) and I could get all the way to the end except there is NO letter drive to pick up the cdrom. :hmm: Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know this is an older version of windows, but this laptop does not have the horsepower to run xp.

Again, thanks for any help you all can give.

Welcome to CTH.

I'm not as much as an expert but here's my ideas.

In the other thread you linked to it says "If D doesn't work, try E: then F: , etc.". Did you try A: or B:? Did you try the whole alphabet?

Did you start up the computer with the cd-rom in it and go into the BIOS setup? Does your BIOS see the cd-rom? Does your BIOS say anything about your computer being bootable from the cd-rom or do you know if it is? Is there a section about the boot sequence for you to look in?

Did you download and install the CD_ROM drivers linked to in post 7 of the thread you linked to? If so, they might just not be able to use the brand of cd-rom on your computer.

Have you been able to read or copy anything from a cd in the cd-rom?

Have you tried to boot from a bootable cd? Do you have one?

Did you use a boot disk with cd support? That is a very old thread and you can get boot disks for win95 with cd support
