Hi,

I searched archives with the title listed above and found no results.

I have a dino Gateway P5-120 as back-up desktop.
It's running win95.
For an old desktop it runs pretty well.

But I do have a problem with Win95 during start-ups and shutdowns.
Each time the Windows color splash screen appears the hard drive shuts down.
So I end up with the Windows splash screen and nothing else.

Each time I have to press any key (no such message displayed) to get the drive to continue loading or unloading windows.

How can I get this small glitch to stop occuring?

Well first thing to make sure it isn't any of your programs causing it. Go to start/run and type in msconfig then click on startup tab and take the checks out of everything but system tray/ apply close out then see if you can shut down and boot normally.

Thanks,

I tried the method you prescribed.
It's not found on my version of Win95.
I do have that option on Win98.

When I used the run command, I got a message stating file not found.
I also tried to find "msconfig" on my hard drives, using find (search) discovered none.
Is there another way to find out what is booting at start up?

Thanks again for your input

Keep forgetting what might and might not work in 95..........Ok go HERE (http://www.dwightblackburn.com/startup.htm) and it will tell you how for 95 scroll past the 98 instructions.

hi

for a configuration tool
try msinfo32
(hmmm, this may even have the boot option config tool, I cannot recall)

if it does not do bootoptions
Change the attributes for MSDOS.SYS so it is not 'Read Only', MSDOS.SYS is found in the root directory of your C:\ drive. Open the file using Notepad or another text editor (not Microsoft Word or any word processor).

Change the value of 'Logo=' to 'Logo=1' for splash screen enabled or 'Logo=0' for disabled.
use save as, and in the little box underneath select ALL FILES, so it does not get the txt extention.

then make it read only again
Changes will take place on the next reboot.

and also try sysedit
you might benefit by adding a line in system.ini
in [386enh] section in system.ini
if it is not there, add the line
EmmExclude=A000-C7FF

save, exit, restart

I got around and checked the links.
Lot's of basic forgotten info by me.

Thanks again!

Hi
I am not sure you looked at it, but msinfo32 also gives access to repair tools.

and... I got the 98 machine running again, so I looked at it to refresh my poor memory.
(poor I...) :D

msconfig is also found in msinfo32.
