Okay, this needs a longwinded explanation, but I really need some help. Here goes:

I have an HP EasyNote Laptop, 12 months old. Running XP.

Thing is, the Laser has gone on the DVDRW. And I'm trying to get it to pick up my photoshop disk, so I can reinstall after a format, but it won't detect it, and it won't detect many other disks either.

I really need this program, and I also have a backup 80GB hard drive. And another computer, which is my mother's but I could use it for storage.

Is there any way that I could install CS2 onto my Backup HD using my mother's computer and then copy the files onto my HD? Would that work? I'm toying with the idea of trying it but kowing my luck it wouldn't work and then it'd screw it up some more.

PLEASE help, I really miss my Photoshop!

Hi Holliki, welcome to CTH.
As it's only a year old, get that drive replaced/fixed under warranty. Now's the time to do it.

If the 80G is in an external enclosure, hook it up to Mom's PC, install Photoshop on it, and then hook it up to your laptop. But still get that DVD drive fixed.

If the 80G is in an external enclosure, hook it up to Mom's PC, install Photoshop on it, and then hook it up to your laptop. That won't work, since photoshop requires several registry keys to run. Registry keys are not transferred over with the Photoshop installation drive, they are bound to the system partition (the registry on the C: drive) of the PC it was installed on. What you could do though is make an image of the CD and use virtual CD/DVD drive software (like Daemon Tools) to mount the image off of the 80GB, then use the virtual drive to install it on your PC as if it were off the disc. It'll install faster that way, too.

actually what they did is to stop people from making copies. You cannot make a legal backup if you have to bypass security to do it. That is against the law (dcma) here in the states. In other words you cannot legally make a backup anymore.
