View Full Version : Freeware replacement for winrar/winzip

There is a program called ICEOWS that I think is a worthy freeware replacement for WINRAR. This program zips and unzips a lot of different compression formats including .ice. Has worked for me. No adware/spyware in it either. I would definitely recommend it esp since it is one software that does the job of winzip and winrar combined and then some. And conveniently works from the context menu.
Here's the link:http://www.iceows.com/Download.htm.
And by the way ICEOWS means 'Interface de Compression Ergonomique pour windOWS' -must be French.

Does that alow you to make .Rar files as most freeware compressers i've found only let you unrar?

the program I use with winrar is 7-zip ( http://www.7-zip.org/ ) . It's small, clean, 77% as powerful as winrar, it's free & open source. Their compression ratio of 7z format is said to be best among all & it has pretty good encryption

Thanks for the (late) response ruab, but we already have a Free alternative software list (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106139) which suggests exactly that program. (Though the list was added after this topic was posted)

Your list is not a definitive source and members are free to post their own recommendations.

No, it's not definitive by any means, but however it does already contain the exact same suggested free alternative compression tool. What's the point of a Sticky, if the same information is going to be recycled into the other threads? Shouldn't we be encouraging people to read the stickies first, before asking questions (or in this case, making suggestions) that have already been covered?

This thread was started by a user recommending ICEOWS. I don't see that in your list.
ruab is well within his/her right to post the other alternative in this thread. After all, it is titled "Freeware replacement for winrar/winzip".
Your software list has no order or definition. I think a user looking for an alternative to WinZip would look at this thread before trawling through yours!

Are you saying it would be better to start a new thread for each possible free alternative, as opposed to one, convenient (aphabebetically-ordered) list?
So, by the same standard, it would be acceptable to start a thread in the Windows XP forum, asking which software is incompatible with SP2, but it would be considered inappropriate to post a link to the MS list of affect programs by SP2 (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48085) sticky?

I'm saying that samanand has posted a viable topic and just because you have posted something similar it doesn't mean i'm going to close this thread.
You have seen here that someone has posted an alternative to a program and a description of that program. Other members have posted feedback and replies. I bet you would start moaning if members started posting feedback or replies in your thread.
Accept it and stop moaning.

This scenario was discussed when proposing the sticky. (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=540083&postcount=4)
Plus additional posts suitable for this thread that are started as new topics can be moved into the main thread and indexed (with notification to a mod by PM)
Accept it and stop moaning.

I'm tired of arguing. I'll leave it if you will, degs. I just want to make it clear that I never had anything against the original post; the thread was started before that list was even started (in fact it was threads like these that inspired it). I merely wanted to point out that 7-Zip specifically had already been noted as a freeware replacement for WinZip/WinRAR (making ruab's post redundant, as it was posted after the list had been made).

Does anyone know if there are any freeware real estate management applications (to manage a portfolio of real estate listings for sale and rent)?
I have searched but as yet found nothing.
Thanks to anyone who would know.

Thanks for that.
I wasn't clear in my post - I am actually looking for a PC installable real estate software that is freeware, not a online script.
Thank you,
Bo

I prefer 7-zip(free program), and I never drop it to use other one! Just my opinion!

I don't really zip I used to use 7zip but after a rebuild of the comp I never reinstalled.
For unzipping I use unzip them all bit crappy but does the job. The have a dodgy logo :)

Izarc (http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/izarc.htm) is one I've used for ages, it supports all the file extensions that's commonly used, and more. :)
