netscape 7 proxy settings

I have recently installed Netscape 7.
When I set the proxy connection to auto proxy configuration url or direct internet connection navigator works but mail returns a message connection.refused
If I change the proxy setting to mannual then mail works and browser returns the message connction.refused.

I have cheked the seetings under mail&newsgroups and the automatic url is the same as the mannuals.

What is causing the connection refused response

Hi gogreb, welcome

This is very odd, if you specify the name of the proxy server rather than letting it detect it does that work?

I have tried with the proxy address specified and get the same problem.

I have uninstalled 7 completely and done a clean install and I get the same problem.

This is very frustrating.

Is this at work or your ISP's proxy that's causing problems?

This is a stand alone home based computer.

I also have 4.79 loaded and don't have this problem with it. (7 is set as default browser and mail)

I log on as the administrator so that I have the highest possible permissions on the system as well.

Could this be a set up or permissions conflict betwen 7 and 2000 ?

I'll try anything at the moment.

Still

Are you sure that your ISP requires you to use a proxy? Most don't.

If I don't specify the proxy then browser dosen't work, I get the message connection refused and mail works fine, but when I do specify the proxy the browser works and the mail gives the message connection refused.

4.79 uses automatic connection through the same isp without any problems thats why i believe there is a problem in 7 but I can't work it out as the proxy settings are identical to 4.79.

and its making me

can you offer any other suggestions

Check that it is set only to use the proxy for HTTP protocol, if you're given that option (I don't have NS7 installed here to be able to check)

I have set the mannual proxy address for http and specified no proxy for the mail server under the mannual setting and it appears to be working.

This would seem to be a bazaar setting but hey if its working I'm not questioning it.

Thanks for the suggestions

Sounds very much like it's detecting it wrong, presumably because a proxy is giving duff info about what protocols and services it proxies on, but glad you're working
