Help with opening ports!!!

Hi. I just got a new Xbox 360 and was testing my networking settings and it said "NAT was moderate." I did a search on google for "Xbox 360 port forwarding" and it came up with this: http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2006/01...s-heres-a-tip/ it says to open ports "To fix this, set your NAT to Open by opening the following ports on your router: 88 (UDP), 3074 (UDP), and 3074 (TCP)." The problem is that I don't know how to open ports and dont know what "(UDP), (TCP) and NAT" are. Any help on how to open ports? I have Windows XP, Norton Internet security and some sort of Dell brand router (that has never been a problem before now...)

Could I please have step by step easy instructions on how to open these ports? If you need any more information feel free to ask

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. This is also in the Windows XP operating system board because I wasn't sure where it should go.

That's why I said "P.S. This is also in the Windows XP operating system board because I wasn't sure where it should go." at the bottom of my post. Please deleate the one that shouldn't be there.

We need the model info on the router as setting up port forwarding varies from router to router.

Hello leaemealone and welcome to CTH. Forwarding ports is pretty easy and pretty SOP for games and such. It would help us most if you could post the model, and ver number of that router. I'm sure there is a sticker on the bottom of it someplace with a model and ver number. The ports that it wants to have forwarded are just ports the XBox uses Don't worry too much about what NAT, UDP, and TCP mean unless you just want to learn a little about networking. We will be happy to fill you in on that stuff if indeed you want to know, so post back and we can go from there.

OK. I'm going to be lazy here. Go to http://www.portforward.com/english/r.../XBConnect.htm and follow the directions. However, if you are not sure about what you have to do and have questions, please ask them. I sent you off to portforward, because what the do there is compile directions for setting up port forwarding on routers. The page i'm sending you to is specifically for setting up the ports for XBox connect.

Let us know how you fair.

Fast question is this site safe? Is it OK if I enter in my IP, maybe this isn't the bad one to give away I don't know...

Also how do I find my static ip? And what is a Destination IP Address, and MAC Address (Or where do I find them)? Other than that I should be fine.

And is XBConnect the same thing as Xbox Live because they have their own site http://www.xbconnect.com/ but if it is different I will just forward the ports that are in the article I listed above.

Thanks for all the help. I'm not too good with the technical part of computers.

Ooops, they are different, so you want to use the ports you originally had. No need to post your IP address. Gotta run...I'll get back with the info on the rest of your questions unless someone beats me to it

first does your xbox have a fixed IP address or a dynamic ip address
If you have a dynamic IP address... I'm going to have you do things a little different. Instead of a static IP address, I think it would be easier to do a 'reserved IP address' at the router.

[ a static IP address you set at the PC and if you do that you also need to set your DHCP server ip addresses. A reserved IP address you assign at the router. The end result is the same in that your PC will always have the same IP address]

See http://www.csus.edu/reslink/ps2xboxmac.stm on how to determine the MAC address of the Xbox. Lets say its 00-0A-A2-28-AD-CA
Write down the address you'll need it later.

Now follow the directions from portforward and log into you router. Then do to "Advanced settings". Find DHCP settings then IP reservation.

You want to enter the MAC address you recorded from your PC and assign it an IP address. You can pick just about any IP in the range you are using (something like 192.168.2.43 should be fine )

The IP address you assign here will be the address to use for the DESTINATION ADDRESSS when setting up port forwarding.
If you have a static IP address. Write it down along with the xbox MAC address.
So, based on your 1st post you need to forward 3 ports (88 (UDP), 3074 (UDP), and 3074 (TCP)) so you need to add 3 port forwarding rules.

For example (based on my example MAC address and example IP address)

#1
Service Name xbox1
Incoming Ports From 88 To 88
Destination IP Address 192.168.2.43
Destination MAC Address 00:0A:A2:28:AD:CA
Destination Port From 88 To 88
Port Type UDP

#2
Service Name xbox2
Incoming Ports From 3074 To 3074
Destination IP Address 192.168.2.43
Destination MAC Address 00:0A:A2:28:AD:CA
Destination Port From 3074 To 3074
Port Type UDP

#3
Service Name xbox3
Incoming Ports From 3074 To 3074
Destination IP Address 192.168.2.43
Destination MAC Address 00:0A:A2:28:AD:CA
Destination Port From 3074 To 3074
Port Type TCP

I hope you could follow all this. Let me know if I can clear anything up.
