Help with client

Hi

I have a host running XP Pro and a client running XP Home, both without service packs installed. They are connected from my BT phoneline through a BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL modem, and together with a crossover cable and 1 Netgear FA310TX card in each. I can file share no problem and I have an internet connection on the host.

I do not have an internet connection on the client.

Cheers

Beanie

You may need to run the "Set up Home or Small Office Network" wizard again, paying attention to the prompts referring to sharing the Internet connection.
You may have to do this on both PC's

Did you run the Network Setup Wizard? There should be an option that says 'this computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway or another computer'.

Oops.. posted seconds after someone else.. I basically repeated the same thing.

Have run the setup a few times and couldn't make it any different. Could I have turned something off in my system configuration utility whilst tweaking???

Cheers

I had a similar probem a few years back, with a friend's set up, similar to yours.
IIRC, I had to bridge the Client NIC and the Internet connection, to get it going.

Before trying that though reboot your PC's after running the wizard above, as by the timing of your posts, I dont think you did that

Hi

Tried a reboot after running the wizard on a few occasions. Didn't help. Do you think I should try bridging?

What about my TCP/IP settings?

On my host, do I need 1 NIC to the modem and another card to connect to the client with the ethernet cable. Or can I use a crossover cable to connect the two comps together and the modem to the host via USB?

You should be able to get it going with the wiring you have. I'd at least upgrade the server to SP2, but thats just my opinion... Regardless of that, open up your network connections on the server and then open the properties for the connection to the internet. Go to the advanced tab and select 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection.

BTW - I assume that the client is set to obtain it IP address automatically.

cmd /k ipconfig/all [use to start ipconfig from 'Run']
cmd /k ping <some website, like google or yahoo> [use to ping 'www.google.com' from 'Run']

I've tried that zip but it doesn't work. I've configured the firewall as well but still no joy.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers

Hmm... Let's see if the client side config looks sane. What does ipconfig/all show on the client? And what does 'route print' show on the client?
