Desktop highlights 2 or more items at a time

Ive tried to fix this problem by myself. Help! Im afraid Ive done more damage than good.
If I want to use my shortcuts on my desktop, one or more get highlighted at a time. For example, if I want to get into -my computer-, I right click on it and it will highlight (and run) the recycle bin shortcut and my SBC DSL shortcut. Im confused as to why it does this and would love some help.
I am running windows ME,zone alarm,sbc online protection.

Hello Cindy, welcome to the community.

First, have you tried System Restore?

To Run System Restore program click on:

“Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore”

Select “Restore my computer to earlier time” and click next

Select a date prior to this happening.

You'll get a warning that your restoring your system to an earlier date.

Your system will restart.

See if that brings it back to working condition.
