I'm trying to setup my cable modem up with a router, so I can run my PC and Xbox Live at the same time.

I'm following the steps in the manual to a 't'. Once I've set up everything, I turn on the PC and it doesn't recognize that the internet is running. The internet light on the router is lit up, and all the cables are where they should be.. but nothing is working.

Connection: Cable - Motorola SURFboard modem - LINKSYS Network Everywhere 4-Port Router

OS: Windows XP

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to CTH Mako,

Lets see if we can get you some internet access here. First let me ask you a question. From your computer that is directly connected to the router via cat5 or "ethernet" cable can you log into the router. For a linksys the default ip should be 192.168.1.1 so in a web browser you would type that ip in the address bar. So type http://192.168.1.1 and hit the enter key. If the computer is connected to port 1 - 4 on back of the router you should get a login screen at this point. The default for linksys is to leave the top box blank and type admin in the lower box. That should at least get you into the routers setup area. Post back and let us know how that goes. If you can get into the routers setup area then we can run thru some settings and see why it is you aren't getting a connection to the net.

I'm connected to the internet by the USB cord.. The ethernet cord isn't hooked up.

When I use the ethernet/router combo, I can't run the internet. Should I hook the router/ethernet cord up and type that IP in the address bar, even though no pages are displaying?

I'm a bit lost here sorry. You say your computer uses a USB connection for internet? Do you have USB going to the router? Or do you have a USB wireless adapter? I'm trying to get an idea of if the router or modem either one is USB because if they aren't then why would you use a USB cable to try and get internet?

My cable modem came with a USB connection AND a ethernet cable connection. You, of course, can't do both at the same time. At the moment, I have the USB connected instead of the ethernet.

I want to unhook the USB, and use the router with the ethernet cables, so I can run my PC and my Xbox Live at the same time.

Ahhhh thats much more clear thanks. What you want to do is use ethernet cable to connect the cable modem to the routers WAN port then connect your computer with ethernet to port 1 on back of the router. Once thats done you can log into the routers setup area and change the settings to work with your connection. The default ip address for a linksys router again is 192.168.1.1. For most cable connections the connection type will be "dhcp" or "obtain ip auto". Then find the MAC address clone option and enable it as well as have it clone the MAC address of your pc. The default MTU setting for cable is 1500. That should get you basic connectivity. Post back with questions or comments.
