Format HD and reinstall win 95 on Cybermax

Hi, I'm new. I've spent hours reading through Windows 95 forums. I have my dad's old Cybermax AMD K6 233 MHz that I am wanting to erase HD and reload windows 95 (has version 4.00.950B with OSR 2-not 2.1) because I keep geeting blue screen fatal exception errors "A fatal exception OD has occurred at 0028:000000AB", it has tons of software not needed, it is just slow and I' d like to let or 6 and 8 year olds use it to just learn the computer. I have the windows 95 boot disk and Windows 95 & Plus CD ROM that came with it, but I have also made a windows 98SE OEM boot disk as I've read this will make it easier as it loads a CD ROM driver. To get to the point, I just want to make sure I understand how to do this all and how to verify I have a good boot disk and winodws 95 CD ROM before I start. I have printed your tutorial articles that really pertain to windows 98, but am still apprehsive. Are there any known issues? Thanks-hoping Smurfy might reply

Sorry not smurfy. First make sure you have the drivers for everything. Your video card, your modem your audio etc. Go to the link in my sig for boot disks and get the one for Win95. The disks all have CD support. Fdisking and formatting is basically the same for win95 or win98

Here's a good article on it.

Formatting and Installing Win95

Considering that you're getting the blue screen, perhaps you should boot from that windows 98SE OEM boot disk you made and type:

scandisk c:

then press enter to see if your hard drive is going bad.

Hi
a few things I want to say

that scandisk before you start is a really good idea
I would take this ONE step further
it still runs, and you can try the following while it still does
run sysedit
go for system.ini
in there, go for [386enh] section
and you look for a line with

EmmExclude=A000-C7FF

if it is NOT there, add it like written here

exit sysedit, and restart the machine
it may run more stable now, and you can then look in device manager
videocard
modem
soundcard
(the sound device on modem will often cause problems during driver installation, so you had better have the driver disks for the modem and soundcard. sound works when both are installed.)

as for fdisk, no need to fdisk

as for format, do NOT use the /s switch, but do use the /u swith
(it takes longer than the /q switch, but this will erase the fat mirror)

when 95 runs again, enter that line in system.ini
this makes for less problems when apps call to an area of the video adaptor memory adress windows oft releases thinking it is not in use...

good luck.
after the fresh install, I recommend you look for a little tool called ERU, and it is on the 95 CD
install it, and then run ERD from the folder it created.
BEST little rollback app for 95 (apart from ghost) and mostly overlooked.

I think OD 0028 is related to vidcard adaptor, and that EmmExclude line could be the cure you want.

I would also advise you copy the win95 folder to hard disk, and run setup from the copy on hard disk.

Wow, thanks for all the ideas. I'll give them a try before I go through the headache of reloading everything. Thanks again!

looking at device manager tells you which drivers you need for the fresh install, maybe you want to download newer ones, maybe you don't have them and need to DL them, period.
