2 pcs + 1 dsl =?
Hi,
I just hooked up SBC yahoo DSL and to my main pc and now want to hook up a second that is one the same desk. A friend gave me a Linksys BEFW11S4 router but I have no instructions and while I was looking for some to download all I see are complaints about it. I'm wondering, since I don't need a wireless hookup as the other system is nearby...isn't there a way to just run a splitter, to turn one input into two. Sorry if that's a stupid question, it just seems logical to me but what do I know ~LC |

Welcome
![]() http://www1.linksys.com/internationa...oid=6&ipid=263 You can get the user guide and quickstart guide. It is a 4 port router with wireless as well. Are you saying you have a 1 port router?

Hi Degs, thanks for the reply and welcome
![]() My Linksys router has what looks like one input and 4 outputs, the modem that came with my dsl hook up has a single in and out...is that what your asking? Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. ~LC |

Download the QuickStart guide from the link.
You have 5 ports on the back. You plug your modem into the WAN port. You plugs your PCs in to one of the other LAN ports.

That's assuming you haven't got a typically British USB only modem.

Thanks, I'm looking at the quick start guide now....it's EXACTLY what I need!
I need to get some information from my provider and I'm missing the cables but after that I should be all set. The guide is super detailed, I should have no problems at all. Wizard, I'm in the U.S. so I guess I won't have USB modem problem, thanks for the warning ...I'll report back tomorrow, hopefully I'll be in business. ~ LC |

Lot's of ISP's in the UK supply cheap USB only modems .... I imagine they save money this way. Last edited by The Wizard; February 9th, 2006 at 07:15 PM. |

Not completely true. There are a few routers out there that have a USB input so you can attach a USB modem to them. (Here's one and but I believe there are others.

True there are a few, but limited choice and not normally the brand(s) you would choose.
Also the price of Wireless Modem/Routers has really dropped now, so to mess about with a hotch potch of makes and models, with potential for compatibility issues, just isn't worth the risk IMO. A nice Linksys is pretty cheap now, in the UK. |

I actually do I agree with you. I hate USB modems. They seem to be easily affected by other USB devices connected to the PC.

I just happen to have a cheapo router and the ISP-provided modem is unusable together with it. So for these reasons it's been left in the corner under the desk and I've made other arrangements, but you both have confirmed what I assumed. Thanks.
The router has a USB input for a printer...oh well nevermind.
