Can't vote in your poll since you never mentioned what's in the computer to begin with. CPU? Mem?

chrisjmyers1204, I have split the poll from the question on .cfm files as they are unrelated. You wouldn't get anyone to vote otherwise.
As far as the poll is concerned, alfons is quite right, how are we supposed to decide if we don't know what it's got now? Some PCs running Win95 don't need hardware upgrade to run Win98/me/2000/xp.

Well once you get above the type of processor you have the slot is different (i think) and the motherboard may not be able to handle it.

there is a reasoning behind the why I said what I said;
up ram = $
up 98 = $$
or, up me = $$ (plus that the system is prolly not up to it)
up Cpu = $ (even when I suppose you find one, it gotta be gotten cheap)
mobo = $$$
mobo + Cpu + ram = $$$$$$
(and then comes vidcard $$$$)
and most of all, the original software suite (= $$$$$$ )is not gonna run on other mobo, because you cannot install it off the rrecovery CDs
that is $ + $$ + $$$ + $$$$ + $$$$$$$
an old PB has limited upgrading possibilities
add a bigger HDD ?
add a burner?
well, get a better PowerSupplyUnit too

I thought I'd look into Packard Bell to see what the last known configurations of their computers were because I didn't think they were around anymore. I used to see a lot of them around a number of years ago, they sort of filled the low end of the market or the "Computer-for-the-Inexperienced" niche and thought that any search for info on PB would lead to a few articles dealing with the remnants of PB users as well as surplus stores selling what was left of the hardware. Well, I was really surprised to find that PB appears to be alive and well and doesn't appear to be dealing with the North American market.
Here's a site on Packard Bell Upgrading (http://www.packardbell.com/) by Packard Bell - they appear to be a branch of NEC.

off the cuff
right now, I have to dig into the innards of a PB (NEC) and the poor thing is a poor thing indeed.
MHO
they suck
but, to answer the original post,
just add more ram, and configure that software (uninstall what you do not need by ways of smartrestore... (( and you do need the CDs that came with the thing.))...
and don't do more to it than that.
it is wasted money

PACARD HELL
They make:
Good Doorstops
Lamps
Coasters
Trash Cans
I would not put a PENNY in a PB....
