Util to find out MAC address
I'm looking for a utility that can tell me the MAC address of a machine on the other side of a router.
I don't have any access to routing tables. Last edited by vtonelli; October 16th, 2002 at 06:00 PM. |

Hi vtonelli,
Unless your a system administrator you will not be able to scan for MAC addresses. What need do you have for MAC addresses?

I am assisting the network admin with some traffic analysis. We keep a record of each IP address and the corresponding MAC address. I was hoping to be lazy and not have to leave my office to get this info!
The other workstation is on the other side of a router and on a different subnet.

Do you use WINS resolution on your network?
If so, poll the station you want to identify with the NBTSTAT command Example of syntax: NBTSTAT -a <computer name> or NBTSTAT -A <target ip address> Notice the lowercase "a" when using netbios names and the capital "A" when using an ip address. typical NBTSTAT output: Local Area Connection: Node IpAddress: [192.168.0.71] Scope Id: [] NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table Name Type Status --------------------------------------------- <NAME> <00> UNIQUE Registered <WORKGROUP> <00> GROUP Registered <NAME> <03> UNIQUE Registered <NAME> <20> UNIQUE Registered <WORKGROUP> <1E> GROUP Registered <USER NAME> <03> UNIQUE Registered MAC Address = 00-20-18-A0-E5-0E Then again, if WINS is not being used... we'll have to come up with another solution to accomodate your lazyness

WINS isn't being used. Thanks for all of these tips. I ended up getting off my fat butt and checked it manually!

Dahmna: The manufacturing floor in this company has over 250 PCs scattered all over and there really isnt any map as to where they are.. so when one is causing problems or I have to locate one, NBTSTAT helps me find out who is logged on so I can look for a face instead of a barcode on the side of a tower!!
that is my main use for it Vtonelli: Well, sometimes the most obvious way, wheter it represents the least effort or not, is the easiest Glad you got everything sorted out.

If you go to www.download.com and do a search for a program called advanced ip scanner. this program will do it for you so you dont have to use the command prompt.
