My computer will not completely boot up in any mode, I have tried the startup disk, but when I run scanreg from the floppy it fails saying drive e: is not ready, but drive E is the cd-rom drive is there any way to make scanreg, scan the c: drive?

Hello Deadwitch, welcome to the community.
Have you check the boot sequence in the bios?

Yes the sequence is right, after trying to use scanreg /restore and fix niether one worked I tried to reinstall over the old OS just to rescue some family pictures and stuff, after starting with the bootdisk I get the errors "
"The following file is missing or corrupted IFSHLP.sys" "error in your config.sys file on line 3" "the file is missing or corrupted smartdrv.exe" " warning the high memory area (HMA) is not available. Additional low memory (below 64K) will be used" and then it starts checking the memory but never finishs.

You can work around the issue (PITA, though) by punching F8 furiously until you get the boot manager selection screen, pick the option for a "step-by-step boot" (interactive) and answering "NO" when asked about smartdrv and ifshlp.sys.
If you've done a reinstall, these files are probably referred to by your CONFIG.sys and AUTOEXEC.bat in the root (c:\) directory. Add the letters "REM" to the lines that refer to these files and reboot --- hopefully that'll help.
OTOH, it may not; the only reason I bopped by here is because I'm on a quest to find out how to get Windows ME *not* to use those files. And, IIRC (it's been a couple weeks since I saw the machine in question), it's not as easy as all that.
Still, might be worth a try. IME, no two winboxen are ever quite the same after the leave the factory.

I've run my startup disk and when I type in scanreg /restore. It brings me to the screen as if it were going to scan, but then says "No backups were found to restore." Anyone know what this is about?
