Hey, my network is being a rat !!
help me fix it please :D

well, i have a small home network. It consists of two computers, i will call them computer A and computer B. Computer A is the internet host and computer B connects through it.

When copying a file from computer B to A the network utilization is about 0.96%. when copying a 7 minute video clip it estimates over 45 minutes which is very wrong!!!!!. When i open a movie file on computer A from B ... the network utilization is normal and it runs fine.

When copying a file from computer A to B the network utilization is normal aswell, so i suspect the only problem is uploading from computer B to A.

i would soooo like this one fixed..as it is extremely frustrating.
the network hardware is as follows
Computer A : Realtek RTL8029AS based Ethernet adaptor
Windows XP
Computer B: Realtek RTL8029AS based Ethernet Adaptor
Windows XP

thanks dudes/ladies :D

Try swaping the two enternet cards. See if the pc with the slow upload turns fast. So switch the crad between computer a and b.

Hi markus,

Since both machines have the same ether cards you might
want to replace them with 3Comm or Linksys cards. Some
cards can be finicky.

i tried swapin the network cards arround but i still get the same problem... could it be the cable? i cant exatly test easily as the cable runs some 40m through my house. im not sure if it could be cable issues ....but would a problem such as this come from a cable problem? because its fine one way and not the other.. plus i can get decent network utilization but only when coming from the other computer to mine which is computer B.
(A to B is correct speed, B to A is slow as ....as in 0.7% when copying files)

if it is not a cable problem...then ill just buy some new nic's as they are cheap as chips hey
:D is there a program to test network cables cuz this dude i know had this lil device he slaped on the ends of the cable and it tested it...there shud be a program to do that now shduent there??

thanks dudes and ladies

This may be a bit late, But I have seen when you let network card auto-sence that they do not always do what you expect. Manually set both the speed and duplex to be the same and if you can check that the hub it is setup for the same speed.

A quick test is to FTP a large file from one PC to the other and this will report the transfer rate.

hey man its neva too late :) i still have the problem..when i let windows xp do it for themselves it makes both cards half duplex and the hub allways was cool with that... it used to be normal .. so yea i think ill try wat the otha guy said to test the cable as it does run about 60m through the ceiling of our house and theres like possums and otha animals living in there... ( its australia... ) and yea.. thanks mate
