Hello
Hope someone out there can help me.
1) how do you get rid of or delete infrared comports?
My son accidentally had them installed and after 2 days of frustration I managed to get them off the sub-category list in SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL >SYSTEMS>DEVICE MANAGER>PORTS (COM & LPT)
But they are still listed in the control panel and I don't know if they should be there as they may be interfearing w/ another part of the system.

2) I have card programer that I want to hook up to a com port but the the programer is saying
ERROR: "Device not connected"
The insructions say to remove and reinstall the comport then it should work, this is where the stumbling block comes into play.
In the Device Manager When I click on the + sign at Category "PORTS (Com & Lpt)" the + sign turns into a - sign and a list of sub-categories
drop down, then I click on the sub-category (comport2) It gets high-lited then I click on REMOVE and a window pops up saying:... "You have Device category selected. Device categories cannot be removed. click on the + sign next to the device category, then click on the Device you want to remove".... This telling me what I already had done, I cannot reinstall a comport if it wont' let me remove it.
I have removed and reinstalled comports before and had no problems, not until the infrared comports came on the scene.
I hope I explained this so some can understand it and hope that it's not to confusing. All help will be much apprecaited.___________Redmist

Have you tried to look at the BIOS / CMOS setup which is available to access only during the Power On Self Test (POST) phase? Not knowing anything about your computer, I can't give you specific directions of how to enter the setup program or what to look for but generally the DELete key, F1, or F10 will get you into this utility. It should tell you on one of your startup screens before the BIOS hands over to Windows for the Boot. One of the pages such as the Advanced Chipset Features should have settings for your COM / Serial Ports, IR Ports, and the Parallel / LPT port(s). If it's not activated here, you won't have it in Windows.
