There is a open source program that is similar to microsoft office suite but is free. It can open and save as the microsoft formats and others. Check it out:

Sorry it doesn't clean beer glases but here is what i think having used it only one day:
Calc: Equivelent to excel. Extremyl similar, User interface looks closely alike, has many features, the function things (such as IF statements) are very similar and has a good help file. Very good. Can save and open StarCalc, Excel ,and other files (including it's own)
Writer :very similar to word. Includes spell check. Has many features. Can handle all versions of word (dating back to 6.0 and 95 (don't know which is older) and support starwriter. Also can handle other formats such as rich text.
Impress: Equivalent to Powerpoint. The User interface varies slightly but is easy to get to know. Seems to work closly to powerpoint. Like the others can open up powerpoint documents and save to them.
Draw, Html Writer, Math, and Global: Less useful, Draw is good for flowchart drawing, Html writer is an html editor, Math i can't quite understand, and Global seems to be all of the programs combined.
I would gladly pay close to retail price (as long as it was less than the microsoft office) but it is free. I would not hesitate to download it. And it runs on Mac windows linux and solaris. So what are you waiting for go get it:)

enat66 - thank you very much for your review of Open Office. I have in the past suggested it to folk who cannot afford MS Office but I never knew whether or not it was a satisfactory solution. Your time and effort is much appreciated :D
