safe mode

When i start my computer in safe mode i find that the mouse does not move. the computer still runs and i can access things by using the keyboard but the mouse pointer itself does not move. the mouse its self registers movement (as the optical light brightens) but nothing happens on screen. i have tried using a different mouse and still nothing happens. has anyone got any ideas of how to sort this problem?

Is it a PS/2 or USB mouse?

its a usb mouse which i used to use with an adapter but that stopped working so now its straight to the usb port. i think the ps/2 mouse port is broken or something.thanks
