*Help me AsAp*
heres my situation its a older comp. NEC Ready 9012 with 90Mhz, came loaded with Win95. Im very certain i erased the partition with all of the stuff on it, because it was all messed up and I wanted to load everything from scratch. Computer is still blank, I now want to load Win98 SE, so i put the disk in and start the computer, i did switch it to boot from cd then hard drive, but it gets going then stops and says missing operating system. Could someone please give me detailed easy instructions on how to load and do what I want to do or any help would be extremely useful. thanks all i'm guessing its something rather simple,

Well to start with your going to have to get a boot disk and boot with that(go to link in my sig) and the floppy drive needs to be set to boot first(not the cd) then you're going to have to fdisk and format and make sure your system can handle Win98SE
Microsoft's Getting Started manual says: on a 486DX CPU (central processing unit) with 66MHz (megahertz), 24MB (megabytes) of RAM (random-access memory), and between 125 and 355MB of free hard drive space, you can upgrade to Win98SE. These requirements are just slightly higher than the 16MB of RAM considered minimum for Win98. Realistically, running Win98SE on a PC with the minimum requirements will slow down boot time and software launches, and you may experience more frequent crashes. With both versions of Win98, you'll enjoy new features and easier navigation in an environment that looks like Win95. But on a PC with the minimum requirements, remember the old adage: buyer beware. Performance suffers on low-end machines. And according to Microsoft, "more memory improves performance." How much RAM should your PC have to run Win98SE? You will want at least 32MB; some technicians recommend at least 64MB. To get the kind of performance that will keep you computing quickly and efficiently, you will want to install it on a Pentium machine. Remember when considering an upgrade: Win98SE includes more than 1,200 new drivers, and many existing computers or devices may need an updated BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or device driver. If you're running Win98 on an adequate system with at least 32MB of RAM, upgrading to SE is an easy choice.

Howdy and welcome to CTH:
CTH has a great tutorial right HERE.. The tutorial also provides links to how to partition and then format the harddrive prior to installation !! Murray

hi sokol
the windows 98 CD you have, can you boot it in another computer? Please try that? When it does, do not accept licence, it will then stop setup, and you have not changed a thing. if it boots, and it don't on the old machine, I have to ask a few more questions how many optical drives are in that machine? (if two, have you tried both?) where is it connected to? Same ribbon as the hard drive? secondary ribbbon? if you have two opticals on the secondary, you could disconnect the slave, then try again. the optical drive(s), do you see them when you power up (the machine POST screens) (set quiet aka silent boot to OFF, in bios) on the newer machine, the floppy drive problem. data ribbon securely plugged in the motherboard? striped side to pin 1? on floppy, striped side to pin one? power to floppy? does its light lite up when you start up? if it stays ON, ribbon is put in wrong way. is floppy enabled in BIOS? set floppy seek to ON and do not set to mode 3... that is japanese type of floppy. oh, a last thought, some really old cdrom drives cannot be booted from. period. you could try with a modern one.

Hi
there is either a small triangle next to pin one, or a number one. it can be hard to see. if that connector on the ribbon has a notch in the middle, you cannot put it in wrong. some have a hole plugged in the connector, and you see "missing" pins in the sockets, so these cannot be put in wrong either. the end with the twist in it, goes to the drive

and you made the bootfloppy on that other machine, so the drive itself should be good.
I hope you ran the download so as to make the bootfloppy? (not just copy something to floppy) if that booter itself is good, then the old machine's bootorder is probaly not set to boot from floppy. how many megabyte RAM does the machine say it has when you power up?

Go HERE and download the following file TO YOUR DESKTOP.
Windows 98 Custom, No Ramdrive Win 98 bootdisk works with Windows 95 Now have a clean formatted floppy disk in the floppy drive. Double click on the downloaded file and a window will open up. It will extract the files to the floppy disk. Once that is done, boot the sick puter with this floppy disk. You can then either save the file you downloaded to your hard drive or just delete it.
