Photoshop CS2 - Making Graphic-Enhanced Letters

I have Adobe Photoshop CS2 and I've seen some people make cool looking letters with this. They make it look awesome. I've download a banner backround for a site of mine but I have no clue where to even start at making these cool characters. Any body have any tips? I'm not sure how to even make lines, because the line tool seems to be replaced by the Shapes tool, so whenever I try to make a line it makes an arrow instead.
