Ok I will start this off saying I'm not too good with computers so please bear with me lol.

So here is my deal, my old computer wont boot up right and really really need pictures and audio files off of that computer as many are not replaceable and mean the world to me (yea i know i should of backed them up I've kicked my own ass over that enuf) anyways My old computer has Windows ME and the problem I'm having is when I boot up my computer it goes to the screen where I can choose to boot in safe mode or normal boot etc. well under that it says "Windows has detected a Configuration/ registry error. Use SCANREG to correct this error.

well as far as I know i can not do that from this screen I need to boot up windows to use scanreg, so I try to boot it up in safe mode figuring this is my best bet well i do that and it acts like its gonna boot up just fine it automatically runs scan disk, after it finishes the grey screen just stays there with safe mode in every corner. Not a single thing happens after that, well I tried to boot in normal mode and a pop up comes up saying "new hardware found. searching for new drivers. Then the new hardware wizard comes up. and i choose the automatically search option. Then it says windows is unable to locate the software for this device. If you don’t want to install the software now click finish. to search again click back and when I click finish since i didn’t see any way to go back and find it myself i get a pop up saying something like "Enum\htree\root\o" and it cuts off at that point and under that it says suregcreatekeyfailed or something

Now i really don't have many options available to me, I don't know anybody who can just put my old hard drive into this new computer, I sure as hell cant, I don't really have the money to get a computer place to get my info or install the hard drive, so i to know if there is a program i can put on a CD (I say CD because this computer has no floppy drive) that will help me get my data onto a disk (yes my old computer has a CD burner) or fix the problem or something, now for the worst part I need something that isn't too big in size because i am on....dial up.

Thanks In advance, and I'm sorry if this is badly typed or has alot of typos.

funny, i just had this happen to my laptop. if your problem is like mine tou should use a statup disk. this time when you start your computer you should get options, one should be "start computer with CD ROM support" providing you also have your windows ME CD in the drive this should work. when you get to the command prompt (A:\) i think if you type in help you should get some. lol. it should tell you what to type in to scan or repair the registry. then just do as it says. if you need a startup disk you can download the program from, http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm . correct me if im wrong:)
