Whilst tidying my files i deleted quite a few that looked 'redundent' now my win95 will not boot up. I get various Vmm32 files missing messages and eventually the screen goes blank with a strange buzz? I don't have the original installation disk for Win95 as it came ready installed on the pc.
I was going to upgrade the os, hence tidying the c drive before copying imp documents. I can now only access the dos commands after hitting f8 when booting up. I do have some files that i want to keep and have tried to zip file them with pkzip but the files are pretty big e.g. 90mb and the floppy dirive is unpredictable.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this. Can i recover my win95? or am i better off formating the drive and starting again. Can i recover my documents without windows?

If you have the windows cd, why not reinstall it!

It is possible the setup files are on your hard drive.
Boot into DOS mode and type the following commands - follow each bold command with ENTER key. If any command gives you an error, post back.
1 C:
2a cd /win95
or
2b cd windows/options/cabs
3 dir *.exe /w/p
Look for setup.exe in the list
4 setup.exe

I followed the instructions but no joy! I got errors at 2b, invalid switches?
I tried step 3 and couldn't find the setup.exe in the list.

D'OH!!!
Please replace /s with \s!!!
e.g. 1 C:
2a cd \win95
or
2b cd windows\options\cabs
3 dir *.exe /w/p(These ones stay as switches /)
Look for setup.exe in the list
4 setup.exe
Sorry about that!

I tried the commands again but no luck, still got error messages and couldn't find the setup.exe.
I have recovered my data by installing my hard drive as a slave on another pc (that has windows still intact!).
I then deleted the windows directory from my hard drive from dos and was able to install win98 without having to format the drive.

Great - thanks for posting back.
Obviously the Win95 didn't have the setup files in the usual places on disk.
The slave option is always the easiest way to get around that sort of thing.
