I'm trying to install a new modem on an older dell system and I'm having all kinds of troubles. Windows recognizes the modem and installs it on com4, but when I run diagnostics on it its says "couldn't open port." Also there are 2 serial ports on the MB. Can Anyone help me???

Hi pro2040, welcome to the forum.
What sort of modem is this?
I'm guessing it will be a PCI card WinModem.
There are ways to get these working but I need to be sure that's what we are dealing with.

Yes it is a pci winmodem. The cd that came with it says "Ess 2838 Chipset, Model FM-3623." Also I treid to install the modem but when windows shearched the com ports it didn't find it.

Hi
when I see that message, I look at running processes
Rnaap.exe has to be stopped before you can attempt to search for a new modem or comport
just looking at properties launches rnaap, and when you want to change things, rnaap has to be stpped
Rnaap could be running by previously installed software (fax software)
what I would do is this
first of all, look wether the wave device for modem is properly installed
(this often conflicts with an existing soundcard)
if you see it, re-install its driver, have disk
if you don't have it, do an advanced install, I know what I have, have disk)
the modem may start working now.
if not,
Boot into SAFE mode
get into hardware manager.
remove all instances of COMports
remove all instances of modems you find
remove all instances of wave device for modem (sound section)
(while in SAFE mode, you can see often multiple instances of a device you know you have only one of
when you have to do some troubleshooting, you better remove all instances of these "hardware ghosts")
when you reboot, the system should detect hardware.
this also begs the Question
was there an previous modem?
was it physically removed? (if bust, you get it out of the box)
and was it removed in HW safe mode?
