Can not bring computer in (no store for like 2 hours that fixes). Was on some sites but didnt download anything. Since then whenever I click internet explorer I get the performed illegal operation and shut down message. If I move the error message over though it doesnt shut down. Other programs sometimes now shut down and keep trying to restart. Any free places online that can search for whatever is doing this or do I need to redownload something. Id like to fix the problem somehow. Is this a known virus?

Spyware is always the first thing to suspect when Internet Explorer starts acting squirrely.
Download, install, immediately update and scan with at least two of the following free spyware removal tools: Ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/), Spybot (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-1) and Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button).Let each remove everything it finds.

did those. removed some stuff. Still getting some error message but in a different type of box now. Larger one.

That is still happening too. Not sure whats going on. Any other advice. Appreciate any input. This a known virus? Those 3 didnt remove the problem but did remove other stuff

The next step is to read AnnMarie's post (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86677), download Hijack This from the link in her post and read the Hijack This tutorial, also linked to in her post.
Then start a new thread in the Cyber Safety forum (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25) and copy and paste your Hijack This log into your post. Be sure to tell them everything you've tried so far to fix things.
