Cannot use Norton Antivirus 2002.
My Norton Antivirus program and associated programs such as quarantine are not functioning and are giving me errors.
When I clicked on Norton Antivirus in the start menu it said something like ‘NM.exe cannot be found’, then it began to search for the file. I clicked cancel and I clicked quarantine, but it mentioned something about ‘quarantine engines not found’ or something.
See below for error messages and other details)
I was not sure what the errors meant but seeing as I couldn’t use the program I uninstalled it. However when I clicked details about what was uninstalled, all the displayed data (see NA 2000 uninstall details) were either in use or were unable to unregister. This was a worry so I deleted NA 2000 folder and attempted the reinstall process. I thought reinstalling would solve all my problems, however again I come across some major problems. I began my install from my gateway CD (this CD is packaged with the computer and contains many other products. I have successfully reinstalled NA2000 more than a few times along with other programs without any worries, so I am quite sure that this CD is not the problem) though manual install. Everything was going great until the beginning process of installing to the desired location of install. When I had chosen the location and was told to click next, nothing really happen at first, then about 20 seconds later it began to install. Before to long I had my first installation error. See error message 1
then I clicked ok and it continued the install. Later in the install I had my second error. See error message 2. I clicked ok and it finished reinstalling.
Like it said I then found out it could not be uninstalled. SO I deleted all Norton Antivirus Files from the registry and from the folder, treading carefully as I have Norton Utilities 2002 installed. I then attempted it a second time but still experienced the same problem. So now I am stuck with Norton installed but not functioning and unable to reinstall it.
To get help I went to Http://www.Symantec.com.au for support, but the stupid people have discontinued support for NA 2000 v6.. So as a lost resort I am writing to you to give me so guidance.
Possible problems:
1. Seeing as I have recently (a month or so ago) installed NU 2002 I have been very fascinated by what it can to do. If you are familiar with NU it contains windoctor or system check and both these utilities search for invalid entires in the registry and other bad files on the drives. Well a day or two before I checked NA 2000 and found problems, I had told NU to automatically repair 121 or so invlaid and bad files (most of this repair was deletion). However I later found out that this was a bad idea as after booting, all the audio files were stuffed. So I put the registry entries back using my backup. (Backup of those 121 files or so). The audio files were fine after that, but this problem could have something to do with this. I am not sure.
2. To try and speed up the computer, my brother and me thought we would reduce the files loaded up during startup. Norton Antivirus was one of the programs cut from the list. Both Norton defalert and Norton auto protect were unticked in msconfig. However prior to the disaster I was able to download definition updates. I think this updating was done a day before the disaster. The updates could have caused the problem also.
3. empty
4. Events prior to problem: I was using msn messenger and netmeeting. I was also transferring some of my pictures to friends. I am quite sure I didn’t download any from my friend. However he said that last time (the day before) that the files I sent contained viruses.
5. Viruses on comp or from net
A few things to note:
1. I am registered with Symantec
2. I checked for ads and spyware with adware 5 but the usual files were there.
3. After I first experienced NA 2000 opening errors-NM.exe and stuff, I went to NU 2002 for try system check and windoctor to check for any problems. I was amazed when the following two errors came back from these two utilties:
Windoctor: ‘warning! Undo engine could not be loaded, all fixes for this session cannot be undone’. It then closed
System check: ‘Failed to load system check engines, please reinstall the product’ then it closed.
For an hour or so I had these errors but later for some reason they fixed themselves. This might be associated or is just something different.
OS :win98SE
5. I don’t have a firewall, but now do cause I am unprotected when on the net. The firewall-zone alarm was installed after the problem.
